A man armed with a knife and flammable material held 13 young children hostage at a school in Curitiba, Brazil. Police killed the suspect after negotiations failed, and five children were taken for medical evaluation.
Brazilian police rescued 13 children who were held hostage at a kindergarten in Curitiba on Friday, October 9, 2026, after an armed man threatened to set fire to their classroom. Special operations officers killed the suspect following approximately three hours of negotiations as the situation became increasingly dangerous.
The incident occurred at the São Braz Municipal Early Childhood Education Center in Curitiba, the capital of Paraná state in southern Brazil. The children, all between 4 and 5 years old, survived the ordeal, although some suffered minor injuries.
Five children were taken to a medical facility for evaluation, according to Paraná’s Public Security Secretariat. One child had visible facial injuries caused during the attack, while other children received assistance from emergency personnel at the scene.
Authorities said the suspect entered the school by climbing over a boundary wall before forcing his way into a classroom. He was carrying a knife, a replica firearm and flammable material that he used to threaten the children.
The man reportedly spread the flammable substance around the classroom and held a lighter, warning that he could start a fire. His actions prompted an emergency response involving police negotiators, specialized tactical officers, firefighters and medical teams.
Police received an emergency call reporting the situation and immediately dispatched officers to the school. The building was secured while responders worked to prevent additional people from entering the dangerous area.
The Paraná Military Police deployed officers from its 12th Battalion and the Special Police Operations Battalion, known as BOPE. Aviation units and other emergency services were also involved in the operation.
Teachers and school administrators helped evacuate children who were not inside the affected classroom. Their actions allowed police to concentrate on the hostage situation while reducing the number of people exposed to danger.
Negotiators attempted to persuade the suspect to release the children peacefully. However, he continued threatening them, and officers became increasingly concerned about their safety as the standoff continued.
Police Colonel Alexandre Lopes Dias, commander of the special operations response, explained that the suspect kept the children close to him throughout much of the incident. At one point, he was holding a child on his lap while negotiations continued.
The situation became more dangerous when the children grew increasingly distressed and the suspect began physically assaulting some of them. Police said the attacks created an immediate risk that officers could no longer manage through negotiation alone.
According to the official Paraná Public Security Secretariat statement, tactical officers entered the classroom after identifying an opportunity to intervene. The suspect attempted to reach one of the children during the operation and was fatally shot.
Special operations officers then removed the children from the classroom and transferred them to emergency personnel waiting outside. Police confirmed that all 13 hostages had been rescued.
The rescue ended an ordeal that had lasted approximately three hours. Emergency medical teams assessed the children while authorities continued securing the school and investigating what had happened.
Reports from the scene described emotional moments as families waited outside the school for information. Some parents cried while police and emergency personnel worked to end the standoff.
Local television footage showed worried family members gathering near the school as negotiations continued. After the intervention, officers were seen carrying children away from the building and toward safety.
Curitiba Mayor Eduardo Pimentel welcomed the successful rescue in a public statement. He confirmed that all 13 children were alive and safe, describing the announcement as the news families had been waiting to hear.
The mayor also expressed appreciation for the emergency responders involved in the operation. He emphasized the importance of supporting the children, their families and school employees following the frightening incident.
Curitiba City Hall announced that psychological assistance would be available to affected students and staff. The support is intended to help those involved recover from the emotional effects of the hostage situation.
Children who experience threatening or violent events may need additional emotional support even when they avoid serious physical injuries. Their responses can vary depending on their age, experiences and the support available afterward.
Parents and teachers may also need assistance as they help children return to their normal routines. Authorities have not announced how long the affected classroom will remain closed or when normal activities will fully resume.
The Associated Press reported that the suspect had threatened to use gasoline and other weapons during the confrontation. Police later clarified that the apparent firearm he carried was a replica rather than a functioning gun.
The distinction did not reduce the immediate danger created by the knife and flammable material. Officers also had to consider the risk that an attempted fire could endanger everyone inside the classroom.
Authorities identified the suspect during the investigation but did not immediately release his name publicly. They also had not established a confirmed motive for his actions.
Police officials said the man had a history of schizophrenia, although they did not disclose supporting medical records or explain whether his condition had any relationship to the incident. A mental health diagnosis alone does not establish why someone commits violence.
Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the intrusion, including how the man reached the classroom and whether he had any previous connection to the school.
Authorities will also review the evidence collected during the emergency response. The investigation is expected to examine the suspect’s actions, the threats he made and the circumstances leading to the police intervention.
Brazil has experienced several serious incidents involving violence at educational institutions in recent years. The Curitiba hostage crisis has renewed attention to the security challenges facing schools responsible for young children.
In April 2023, a man attacked a daycare center in Blumenau, Santa Catarina, killing four children with a hatchet. That incident prompted widespread concern and discussions about strengthening school security throughout Brazil.
Other attacks and threats involving schools have led authorities to consider additional preventive measures, including emergency response training, improved communication and procedures for controlling access to buildings.
However, the circumstances of each incident differ. Investigators have not established that the Curitiba attack was connected to earlier incidents or part of a coordinated campaign.
The São Braz case involved an intruder who managed to reach a classroom containing very young children. Police have not yet released a detailed explanation of whether existing security measures failed or were deliberately bypassed.
The rapid evacuation of other students prevented more children from becoming directly involved in the hostage situation. Officials credited teachers and school administrators for cooperating with emergency responders and helping protect the wider school community.
The operation also required coordination among several agencies. Military police, municipal guards, firefighters, medical personnel and specialized tactical units worked together during the emergency.
For the children’s families, the immediate relief of the rescue was followed by concern over the injuries and emotional effects of the incident. Medical evaluations and psychological assistance will be important parts of the response.
The Paraná Military Police confirmed that the suspect died during the tactical intervention. Investigators have not publicly established a motive, and authorities are continuing to examine the events that led to the attack.
All 13 children survived, but the case remains under investigation as Curitiba officials arrange support for the affected families and school staff.
