The Democratic Republic of Congo is dealing with an expanding Ebola outbreak that has now reached a province not previously affected by the virus. Bas-Uele, a region in eastern Congo, was not previously known to have been impacted by Ebola cases.
The latest official update from the country’s health ministry reported that there are now 4,665 confirmed cases of Ebola in the nation, according to The Straits Times. The number includes more than 2,180 deaths related to the virus, according to government data.
The World Health Organization has warned that without immediate action, this outbreak could become the deadliest in history, according to a report from Al Jazeera. As of the most recent figures, the death toll stands at 2,128 out of a total of 4,566 cases reported.
Ebola is a rare but highly infectious disease that spreads through contact with bodily fluids or contaminated objects like clothing and bedding.
Health officials are working to understand how the virus has moved into new areas, including Bas-Uele.
The UN health agency is also considering whether an existing vaccine might be effective against this outbreak after animal studies have shown promising results.
The spread of the disease to new regions raises concerns about how long the outbreak might continue. Jean Kaseya says that if containment efforts are not strengthened, the situation could last longer than a year.
Health workers are trying to trace the source and stop further transmission by isolating infected individuals.
The government has issued warnings about the growing threat of the virus spreading even further. International organizations are preparing to assist with vaccination and treatment efforts.
Public health experts are urging communities to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols.
The situation remains under close monitoring as officials work to control the outbreak before it becomes even more widespread.
