The two pop stars join forces for a retro game show-inspired music video featuring Talking Heads frontman David Byrne, marking Rodrigo’s first official remix and Roan’s first featured appearance on another artist’s song.

Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan have released a remix of Rodrigo’s song “Expectations,” accompanied by a playful music video featuring Talking Heads frontman David Byrne. The collaboration arrived Thursday, October 15, 2026, and marks Rodrigo’s first official remix and Roan’s first featured appearance on another artist’s recording.

The new version transforms a song from Rodrigo’s third studio album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, into a duet about romantic disappointment. Roan contributes a new verse, bringing her own perspective to a track originally focused on unrealistic expectations in relationships.

The accompanying video, directed by Bardia Zeinali, places both singers inside a fictional television competition called The Big Expectations Show. Byrne appears as the eccentric host, Johnny Johnson, guiding the performers through a series of challenges inspired by classic American game shows.

David Byrne Hosts a Retro Game Show

The music video draws heavily from the colorful television sets, elaborate costumes and exaggerated personalities associated with game shows of the 1980s and 1990s.

Rodrigo and Roan appear as contestants competing in different games, with Byrne overseeing the action. The elaborate production includes vintage-inspired outfits, brightly decorated sets and humorous moments designed around the song’s theme.

Byrne plays his fictional hosting role with the mannerisms of an old-fashioned television personality. The appearance gives the video an unexpected connection to one of rock music’s most recognizable performers.

The musician became famous as the lead singer of Talking Heads, whose songs helped define the new wave movement during the late 1970s and 1980s. His participation adds another generation of musical influence to the collaboration.

Producer Dan Nigro also makes a special appearance in the video. Nigro has played an important role in both singers’ careers and produced the new version of “Expectations.”

The visual presentation reflects Roan’s established enthusiasm for theatrical costumes and exaggerated characters. Rodrigo contributes her own sense of humor, creating a production that mixes romantic frustration with colorful entertainment.

The two artists previewed their collaboration earlier in the week through social media teasers. One preview featured Roan joking, “Ooh, Olivia does remixes now,” a reference to Rodrigo’s previous reluctance to release remixed versions of her songs.

Chappell Roan Adds a New Perspective

The original “Expectations” explores the frustration of dating someone who fails to meet even modest standards. Rodrigo addresses disappointment and the gap between what a person hopes for and what a relationship delivers.

Roan’s new verse changes the dynamic by introducing a female romantic interest. Her contribution describes another unsuccessful dating experience, extending the song’s message beyond its original relationship.

Billboard reported that Roan’s addition gives the track a different perspective while retaining the humor and dissatisfaction of Rodrigo’s lyrics.

The remix allows the singers to exchange experiences through their contrasting vocal styles. Rodrigo’s delivery retains the direct emotional approach associated with her songwriting, while Roan brings the theatrical expression familiar from her own recordings.

Their collaboration also represents a milestone for both performers. Although they have worked together previously, this is their first prominently credited duet released as a single.

Roan has contributed backing vocals to some of Rodrigo’s earlier recordings, including material associated with her second album, Guts. Their creative relationship developed before Roan achieved her own major commercial breakthrough.

Both artists have worked extensively with Nigro, whose production helped shape their musical identities. His involvement provides continuity between their individual recordings and the newly released remix.

Rodrigo Continues Her Chart Success

“Expectations” originally appeared on Rodrigo’s third studio album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love.

The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, becoming Rodrigo’s third consecutive studio album to reach the top position. Her previous releases, Sour in 2021 and Guts in 2023, also opened at No. 1.

According to Universal Music, the latest album earned 485,000 equivalent album units during its first week in the United States. The company described it as the largest debut by a solo artist in 2026 and reported that it topped charts in 17 countries.

The project also includes “What’s Wrong With Me,” a collaboration with Robert Smith of the Cure. That recording marked another notable expansion of Rodrigo’s musical partnerships.

Rodrigo is currently performing on The Unraveled Tour, which began in September to support her third album. Universal Music said the tour had sold more than one million tickets worldwide.

The release of the “Expectations” remix introduces another version of a song already familiar to listeners while bringing Roan’s audience into the album’s promotional campaign.

Limited-edition physical editions are also available, including seven-inch vinyl records, CDs and cassettes. The formats are being offered through the artists’ official stores.

A Friendship Built Through Music

Rodrigo and Roan developed their friendship while working with Nigro and performing together. Roan opened several shows during Rodrigo’s Guts World Tour in 2024, gaining exposure to audiences before her own rapid rise in popularity.

Roan’s debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, was released in 2023 and became increasingly successful as her concert performances attracted attention.

Her songs “Good Luck, Babe!,” “Pink Pony Club” and “HOT TO GO!” helped establish her as a major pop performer. She subsequently received the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 2025.

The singers have publicly expressed admiration for each other’s work. Their shared creative connections and experiences helped establish the foundation for the new recording.

They also performed at Rodrigo’s Daisy Chain Fields festival, held August 29, 2026, at Great Park in Irvine, California.

The women-led festival featured Roan and other performers while raising money for organizations supporting women and girls. Universal Music reported that the event generated $20 million for 10 nonprofit organizations.

The festival demonstrated how Rodrigo and Roan have connected their growing musical careers with charitable initiatives.

Chappell Roan Prepares for Los Angeles Fundraiser

Roan is preparing for another major event later this month. Her two-day charity fundraiser, The Super Graphic Spectacular, is scheduled for October 21 and 22 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

The event benefits the Midwest Princess Project, an initiative Roan founded in 2025 to support transgender youth and LGBTQ+ communities.

The first evening will feature performances by Lola Young and Tinashe, while Caroline Polachek and MUNA are scheduled for the second night. Roan will also headline the fundraiser.

Organizers have planned related activities under the name The Super Graphic Block Party, including opportunities for community engagement and volunteer participation.

Net proceeds from ticket sales will support the Midwest Princess Project and its charitable work.

The “Expectations” remix arrives as both artists continue expanding their careers beyond individual recordings. Rodrigo is promoting her third chart-topping album through an international tour, while Roan is preparing a major charity event following her breakthrough success.

For the two singers, the release brings their established friendship and musical connection into a shared recording. The completed remix and its David Byrne-hosted video are now available, while limited-edition physical copies offer another way for listeners to experience the collaboration.
