Matthew Rhys made history at the 2026 Primetime Emmy Awards by winning two lead acting categories in a single night. He became the first actor to win both Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. Rhys had previously won an Emmy for his role in the spy drama series ‘The Americans’ back in 2018. The ceremony was held Sept. 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles and was hosted by Mariska Hargitay.

His first win came for his performance in ‘The Beast in Me,’ a Netflix limited series where he played the character Nile Jarvis, according to Screen Rant. He then went on to win an Emmy for his role as Mayor Tom Loftis in ‘Widow’s Bay,’ an Apple TV horror-comedy series. Those performances marked his second and third acting Emmy wins. Entertainment Weekly reported that Rhys also won Outstanding Comedy Series as an executive producer of ‘Widow’s Bay,’ giving him three Emmys that night and four for his career.

Rhys was nominated in both categories in July, becoming the first male actor since John Goodman in 1995 to receive two lead acting nominations in the same year, according to TheWrap. The competition for the limited series award included Riz Ahmed, Jason Bateman, Charlie Hunnam, and Oscar Isaac. In the comedy category, his fellow nominees were Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Steve Carell, Jason Segel, and Martin Short.

The limited-series win was a surprise because Oscar Isaac had been favored for the award. Rhys beat out these actors to take home the trophy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, the New York Daily News reported. This achievement is especially notable because no actor had ever won both lead acting awards in one night before. He joins a select group of performers who have received lead nominations in two different Emmy genres in the same year.

The last man before Rhys to receive two lead acting nominations in one year was John Goodman in 1995. Goodman was nominated for ‘Roseanne’ and ‘Kingfish: A Story of Huey P. Long’ but lost both awards. No performer before Rhys had won two lead acting Emmys at the same ceremony. Elisabeth Moss was one of the most recent actresses to receive two lead nominations in one year, in 2013. Other past double nominees include Mary-Louise Parker and Daniel J. Travanti. The last performer before Rhys to win two acting Emmys at the same ceremony was Stockard Channing in 2002. The most recent man before Rhys to win two acting Emmys in one ceremony was James Earl Jones in 1991, with one lead and one supporting award.

Rhys’ performance in ‘Widow’s Bay’ was part of a larger success for the show at the awards. ‘Widow’s Bay’ received 19 nominations and won eight Creative Arts Emmys. The series also took home awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series. Supporting actress Kate O’Flynn won her own Emmy for the show. ‘Widow’s Bay’ then won all six of its categories at the main ceremony and finished with 14 Emmys, setting a single-season record for a comedy.

The series was renewed by Apple TV for another season, with Rhys returning as Mayor Tom Loftis. Rhys’ historic wins place him among the most decorated actors in recent Emmy history. He is also known for previous nominations in other shows like ‘Perry Mason’ and ‘Girls.’

His performance in ‘The Beast in Me’ was widely praised by critics. He has now claimed four Emmy trophies in total. His wins were especially impressive given the high level of competition in the categories. This makes him the first actor to win two lead acting awards in a single night. Rotten Tomatoes lists “The Beast in Me” with an 85% critics score and specifically notes the performances of Rhys and Claire Danes in its critics consensus.

The main Emmy ceremony was separate from the Creative Arts Emmy Awards held earlier in September. Kate O’Flynn received the first award of the televised ceremony for her supporting role in ‘Widow’s Bay.’ Rhys’ first award of the night was for his limited series role. He was recognized for his portrayal of a complex and unsettling character in ‘The Beast in Me.’ His second win came after the show’s success at the awards ceremony.
