Kentucky football delivered a major surprise by defeating No. 9 Texas A&M 31-21 in College Station on Saturday. The game took place at Kyle Field. Led by first-year head coach Will Stein, Kentucky managed to beat a ranked opponent for the first time since defeating No. 6 Ole Miss on Sept. 28, 2024. Stein also became the first Kentucky head coach to win a true road game against an AP Top 10 opponent in his first season at the school.
The Wildcats entered the game as 16.5-point underdogs and proved their potential with a strong third quarter performance. Running back CJ Baxter scored twice in the third quarter, helping Kentucky extend their lead to 28-7 and shift momentum in the game. Kenny Minchey threw two touchdown passes and led Kentucky’s offense to 408 total yards.
Minchey completed 14 of 18 passes for 252 yards and was praised by Stein as playing elite-level football. Texas A&M failed on fourth-and-2 from its own 33-yard line late in the third quarter, and Kentucky scored four plays later. Texas A&M had entered the game undefeated after victories over Missouri State and Arizona State.
The loss dropped Texas A&M to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in SEC play. Defensive back Jordan Castell played a key role for Kentucky, finishing with a game-high 13 tackles and an interception. Castell also added an interception in the fourth quarter that helped secure the win for Kentucky.
Kicker Adam Zouagui made a 52-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to extend Kentucky’s lead. The defense frustrated Texas A&M’s offense by intercepting Marcel Reed twice and recording three fourth-down stops. Stein praised Minchey after the game and called his performance elite.
After a disappointing loss to Alabama in which Kentucky fell behind in the second half, Stein took responsibility for the team’s performance. Texas A&M coach Mike Elko admitted he did not prepare his team well and said he didn’t take any positives from the game, ESPN reported. Elko said there was “not an ounce of a positive” from the Aggies’ performance and said the problems started with him. The win improved Kentucky’s record to 2-1 and marked their first conference victory under Stein.
Kentucky will now face South Alabama at home next Saturday as they continue building on this defining moment. The game is scheduled for 12:45 p.m. and will air on the SEC Network, according to UK Athletics. This victory was more than just a win in the standings for Kentucky; it represented a turning point in their season under new leadership.
