The Oregon Ducks, ranked No. 2 in the preseason, were defeated by the Oklahoma State Cowboys in a surprising upset at Boone Pickens Stadium. Oregon was ranked No. 6 in the AP poll by kickoff and lost the game 39-31. The Ducks had entered the game as a heavy favorite, but Oklahoma State outplayed them in nearly every aspect of the contest. Oklahoma State quarterback Drew Mestemaker threw for 317 yards and rushed for 109 yards, leading the Cowboys to a dominant performance. The victory snapped Oklahoma State’s 21-game losing streak against FBS opponents and a 12-game overall losing streak.

The Ducks’ defense struggled against Mestemaker and the Cowboys’ passing attack, allowing 554 total yards, according to ESPN. Oregon had not lost to an unranked opponent since 2021, and they had a 34-0 record against such teams under coach Dan Lanning. The loss ended Oregon’s 41-game winning streak against unranked opponents.

The Ducks had high expectations entering the season, but this defeat was a major blow to their championship aspirations. Dan Lanning, Oregon’s head coach, admitted that the team failed to execute properly in key moments, according to a report from ClutchPoints. He said the team needed to improve on both offense and defense, and that execution was critical for success. Lanning said Oregon lacked rhythm on offense and gave up too many explosive plays on defense. He also said the Ducks were not winning enough battles at the point of attack.

Oregon also had to make adjustments after losing two key coordinators during the offseason, CBS Sports reported. Tosh Lupoi went to Cal and Will Stein moved to Kentucky, leaving Oregon with new coordinators on both sides of the ball. Drew Mehringer was promoted to offensive coordinator and Chris Hampton was promoted to defensive coordinator. The Ducks’ offense struggled on third and fourth downs, similar to their performance against Boise State just a week earlier.

Despite having a deeper and healthier receiving corps this season, quarterback Dante Moore had difficulty connecting with his receivers. Oregon’s offensive line was expected to be one of the best in the Big Ten, but it failed to protect Moore and open running lanes. The team’s rushing game was particularly poor, gaining only 90 yards on 30 attempts. Moore finished 14 of 29 for 191 yards and two touchdowns.

Oregon’s defense missed tackles repeatedly and failed to win at the line of scrimmage in key moments. The Ducks had multiple chances to tie or take the lead in the fourth quarter but failed to capitalize. Oregon briefly moved ahead 31-30 on a 38-yard touchdown pass from Moore to Evan Stewart early in the fourth quarter. Oklahoma State responded with a touchdown drive that ended with Mestemaker’s 10-yard scoring run. A fumble by running back Dierre Hill Jr. in the final minutes sealed the outcome for Oklahoma State.

Lanning said that while this loss was disappointing, it did not define the team’s season or their goals. CBS Sports compared Oregon’s situation to Notre Dame’s recovery after a Week 2 loss in 2024. The Ducks now face a difficult path ahead, with tough road games against top-ranked teams in the Big Ten.

This loss could significantly impact Oregon’s chances of making the College Football Playoff. The team must quickly address its issues if it wants to remain competitive in the remainder of the season. Oregon’s next games include matchups against USC, Ohio State, and Washington, all of which are ranked highly. Oregon also faces Michigan at home and travels to Michigan State later in the season.

The team’s performance in these upcoming games will be crucial for their playoff hopes. Despite the loss, Lanning remains confident that Oregon can still control its own destiny. The Ducks will need to regroup quickly and show improvement in their next outing. Their next game is at home against Portland State on September 18.

This upset has shaken the confidence of both players and fans, but it also presents a chance for growth. The team’s response to this defeat will be closely watched as they prepare for the rest of their season.
