People often say that time seems to pass more quickly as they get older, making each day feel shorter than before. Researchers have found evidence that age is related to how quickly long periods of life seem to pass, although there is no single explanation for the effect. As individuals age, their brains undergo changes that affect how they perceive the duration of events.

Many people feel that time passes faster as they get older, but scientists say the reason is more complicated than simply having an internal clock that speeds up. Research suggests that changes in memory, attention and the way the brain records new experiences may affect how long periods of life feel when people look back on them. Older adults may be more likely to feel that years or decades passed quickly, even though studies do not show that every day or hour literally feels shorter. Scientists are still studying the effect, but current evidence points to a mix of brain changes, memory formation and life experience.

A study published in Memory & Cognition in 2026 provides new evidence about why this may happen. Researchers studied 120 people between the ages of 20 and 91 and asked them about how quickly the previous year and decade seemed to have passed. Older participants were more likely to report that the previous decade had passed quickly.

The way we experience time involves attention, memory and several neurological systems rather than a single biological clock. Scientists have found that the brain’s ability to form new memories decreases with age. The 2026 study found that a reduced ability to encode new information was associated with the feeling that time had passed faster.

That finding challenges one popular explanation for the effect. Researchers did not find that older adults simply had fewer memories of the previous decade. In fact, older participants reported memories that were more vivid and meaningful.

New and distinctive experiences can create memories that are easier to separate from one another. These memories can provide markers that help people organize periods of their lives. Familiar and repetitive experiences can be more difficult to distinguish when people later think back on them.

This does not mean that older people necessarily experience fewer new events. Lifestyle, health, work and social activity can all affect how much novelty a person experiences.

Researchers have also studied how aging affects judgments of much shorter periods of time. The results are more complicated than the idea that an internal clock simply slows down. This internal timing system influences how we perceive durations of time.

One review of aging and time perception found that changes in attention and memory can increase uncertainty when older adults estimate durations. Researchers have also proposed that changes in brain networks involved in timing may reduce the precision of some estimates.

Laboratory experiments do find age differences in some timing tasks. However, the results depend heavily on how researchers ask participants to estimate time.

A meta-analysis found that older adults gave larger verbal estimates of some time periods and produced shorter intervals when asked to generate a particular duration. The same analysis found no significant age difference when participants simply reproduced durations they had experienced.

Another study found that older adults estimated shorter durations for everyday events than younger adults. Researchers said the findings suggested age-related differences in how people orient themselves to time.

The perception of time can therefore change with age, but scientists do not describe the effect as a simple universal compression of every minute, hour or day. Changes are especially noticeable when people look back across long periods such as years or decades.

The brain’s ability to separate and remember individual experiences can also change with age. This makes it harder for people to recall specific details from a day or week. Memory and attention may therefore affect how a period of life feels when a person looks back on it.

The idea is sometimes described as subjective time compression. A year in later life may seem to have passed faster than a year remembered from earlier adulthood, but the size of that effect varies greatly among individuals.

A well-known 2005 study involving 499 people from ages 14 to 94 found that perceived time did tend to speed up with age. However, age explained only a relatively small part of the differences between people. The researchers warned that the findings should be interpreted cautiously.

The sense of time passing quickly appears to involve both psychological and cognitive changes rather than one simple change in brain function. Research has identified several brain systems involved in timing, attention and memory.

The prefrontal cortex and other cortical areas work with regions including the striatum when people judge short intervals. Aging can affect the precision of these networks and the cognitive processes they depend on.

The hippocampus is especially important for episodic memory. Changes in memory systems may influence how people reconstruct the passage of time when they look back on past events.

Some researchers suggest that people rely more heavily on memory and other information when direct timing becomes less precise. Models of aging and time perception describe this as a possible adaptive change rather than simply a failing clock.

However, it also means that older adults can show different patterns when estimating how much time has passed. The result depends on whether researchers are studying seconds, minutes, days or entire years.

Understanding this helps explain why many older individuals feel that time moves faster. It also explains why two seemingly contradictory experiences can occur. A boring afternoon can feel extremely long while it is happening but seem brief when remembered weeks later.

Researchers have examined whether adding more distinctive experiences can change this effect. One study involving older adults during COVID-19 isolation found that unique activities produced richer memories and were associated with better mood. Surprisingly, those participants also reported that time seemed to move faster on days containing more unique experiences.

That means engaging in novel activities cannot simply be described as a way to make time feel slower. Novel experiences may instead make periods of life more memorable and easier to distinguish later.

This insight could be useful for improving quality of life in older adults. The study found that unique experiences were associated with increased positive emotion and reduced boredom.

The science behind this perception is still evolving as researchers continue to study brain aging. Future studies may uncover even more ways that time perception changes with age.

For now, the strongest evidence supports the idea that long periods of life can seem to pass more quickly with increasing age. A 2026 study strengthens the case that the ability to encode new information may be one reason for that effect.

It reflects both biological and psychological adjustments that occur throughout life.
