Paul Boydell has stepped down as chief executive of Travelodge after mounting criticism over security lapses at company hotels. The resignation follows a series of incidents that raised serious concerns about guest safety and hotel protocols.

In one case, a couple in Scotland woke up to find a shirtless man in their room after he was mistakenly given the key card for their door, according to the BBC. The situation drew attention from government officials early this year, including then Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. Starmer wrote to Boydell urging her to seriously engage with the government over security issues.

Liberal Democrat MP Freddie van Mierlo, who represents the area where Travelodge is headquartered in Thame, has also called for Boydell to resign. Van Mierlo criticized the company’s business model, saying it had made too many cost-cutting decisions that compromised safety.

The security problems at Travelodge have been a growing concern for both guests and lawmakers. Boydell’s departure comes as the company faces increasing scrutiny over how it manages its properties.

The issue has highlighted the challenges of maintaining guest trust when operating on a low-cost model. Travelodge’s leadership now faces pressure to improve its policies and prevent future incidents.

The company has not yet issued a detailed statement on the resignation or the steps it will take next. Guests have expressed frustration over what they see as a pattern of avoidable mistakes in hotel operations.

The situation has prompted discussions about how businesses balance cost efficiency with safety standards. Boydell’s resignation marks a turning point for the company as it tries to rebuild its reputation.
