Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: Director Announces Upcoming Performance Mode Visual Update

By Don Williams on March 3, 2024

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the highly anticipated installment in Square Enix’s iconic RPG series, is set to receive an improvement to its performance mode graphics, according to game director Tetsuya Nomura. In a recent interview, Nomura addressed concerns from players regarding the visual aspect of the game’s performance mode.

“We’ve received a lot of feedback on whether the graphics in the performance mode will be improved or not,” Nomura shared. “We hear you, and we are currently working on an update patch to improve that aspect.”

Nomura further elaborated on the specific improvements players can expect. “One part of the update that we are working on is addressing the facial lighting that, in certain situations, can make some character shadows look very scary,” he explained.

The director did not provide an exact release date for the update but indicated that it would not be too far in the future. “I don’t think the release date would be far away from now,” Nomura said.

This announcement comes after the launch of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which has been met with critical acclaim and strong sales figures. However, some players have expressed disappointment with the graphics in the performance mode, which prioritizes frame rate over visual fidelity.

Several gaming outlets, including GameSpot (source 1) and IGN (source 2), have reported on the visual discrepancies between the performance and fidelity modes in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. These reports have highlighted the noticeable difference in lighting and texture quality between the two modes.

“The performance mode’s visuals can sometimes appear flat and lacking in detail compared to the fidelity mode,” GameSpot noted in their review.

IGN echoed similar sentiments, stating, “The performance mode doesn’t look particularly great, and the difference between it and the fidelity mode is quite stark.”

Despite these criticisms, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has been praised for its engaging story, improved combat system, and faithful recreation of beloved characters from the original game. With the upcoming visual update to the performance mode, fans can look forward to an even more immersive experience.
