Rita Wilson Teases Return to HBO’s Girls Revival

Rita Wilson
By Digital News Editorial Team on October 19, 2026

The actress says she is excited about reprising her role as Marnie Michaels’ mother in Lena Dunham’s five-episode reunion, scheduled to begin production in 2027.

Rita Wilson is preparing for a possible return to HBO’s Girls, nearly a decade after the comedy series ended its original run. The actress has indicated that she expects to reprise her role as Evie Michaels, the mother of Allison Williams’ character, Marnie, in a five-episode revival created by Lena Dunham.

Wilson discussed the upcoming project during an appearance at the Forbes 30/50 5-Year Anniversary Summit in New York City on October 16, 2026. Her comments followed HBO’s October 13 announcement that the original series would return with its principal cast members.

The revival is scheduled to begin production in summer 2027, ten years after the original series finale. Wilson’s comments suggest that Evie Michaels could join the returning characters, although HBO has not formally included her in its announced cast.

Rita Wilson Expresses Enthusiasm About Returning

Wilson, 69, expressed excitement about the opportunity to work with Dunham and Williams again. Speaking with People, she suggested that conversations about her involvement had already taken place.

Asked whether she would return, Wilson replied, “That is what I’m hearing, so I don’t think Lena would be lying about that.”

Her response stopped short of a formal casting announcement but indicated that she expects to participate. Wilson also praised Dunham’s creative abilities and spoke warmly about their previous collaboration.

“Lena is one of the most talented people I’ve ever worked with,” Wilson said, adding that she would gladly work with her again.

Wilson also expressed affection for Williams, whose character she portrayed as a daughter during the original series. She suggested that Dunham has a compelling idea for bringing the characters back together.

The actress first appeared in Girls during its second season and returned for several guest appearances. Her character, Evie Michaels, provided insight into Marnie’s family relationships and the expectations surrounding her personal life.

HBO Confirms Five New Episodes

HBO announced on October 13 that five new episodes of Girls are officially in development, with Dunham returning as creator, writer, director and star.

The original series aired for six seasons between 2012 and 2017. It followed four young women dealing with friendships, romantic relationships, financial difficulties and career uncertainty in New York City.

Dunham played Hannah Horvath, an aspiring writer whose ambition often conflicted with her personal decisions. Her portrayal became central to a comedy that examined the confusion and contradictions of early adulthood.

The revival will reunite the four principal actresses who helped establish the show’s identity.

Allison Williams will return as Marnie Michaels, while Jemima Kirke will reprise her role as Jessa Johansson. Zosia Mamet will again portray Shoshanna Shapiro, completing the original group alongside Dunham.

Andrew Rannells is also returning as Elijah, Hannah’s former boyfriend and longtime friend. His character became a regular part of the series through his complicated friendship with Hannah and his attempts to build a career.

The announcement establishes the return of the show’s central ensemble, although additional casting decisions have not been publicly confirmed.

Lena Dunham Finds a New Reason to Revisit the Characters

Dunham, who turned 40 in May 2026, said the idea for the revival emerged around her birthday. She explained that she had missed the characters but struggled for years to imagine how their stories would continue.

According to HBO’s official announcement, Dunham and her collaborators had agreed that the series should return only if they found a story worth telling.

Her change of perspective came as she considered the characters at a different stage of adulthood. Their original experiences revolved largely around the pressures of being in their twenties, while the revival will examine their lives approximately a decade later.

The difference in age creates opportunities to explore changes in careers, relationships, personal responsibilities and expectations. However, HBO has not released a detailed plot description or confirmed specific storylines.

Amy Gravitt, executive vice president and head of HBO and HBO Max comedy programming, welcomed the decision to bring the series back. She said the network was excited to see Dunham examine the transition from the uncertainty of youth to the milestone of turning 40.

Gravitt also noted that the world had changed considerably since audiences last saw Hannah, Marnie, Jessa, Shoshanna and Elijah.

The creative challenge will involve preserving the characters’ recognizable personalities while acknowledging how their circumstances may have changed during the intervening years.

Judd Apatow Returns as Executive Producer

Judd Apatow, who helped develop and produce the original series, will return as an executive producer. His involvement reconnects the revival with one of the principal creative figures behind the original production.

Dunham will also serve as an executive producer alongside Ilene S. Landress and Michael P. Cohen. Williams, Kirke, Mamet and Rannells are expected to hold co-executive producer credits.

One notable absence is Jenni Konner, who served as an executive producer and co-showrunner during the original series.

Konner was an important creative collaborator during the show’s six-season run. She and Dunham later worked together on other television projects, but she is not participating in the announced revival.

HBO has not provided a detailed explanation of her absence.

The returning production team will face the challenge of revisiting a series that developed a strong identity during its original run. The new episodes must account for the passage of time without simply repeating familiar situations.

Several Original Cast Members Remain Unconfirmed

Although the five central performers are returning, questions remain about other characters who played significant roles in the original series.

Adam Driver portrayed Adam Sackler, Hannah’s unpredictable boyfriend whose relationship with her became one of the show’s major storylines. Driver’s career expanded considerably after Girls, including leading roles in the Star Wars films and several critically acclaimed dramas.

HBO has not announced whether Driver will participate in the revival.

Christopher Abbott, who played Charlie Dattolo, is another performer whose involvement remains uncertain. Charlie had a complicated relationship with Marnie before leaving the series and later returning for a memorable guest appearance.

Alex Karpovsky, who portrayed Ray Ploshansky, has also not been announced as part of the returning cast. Ray was closely connected to several central characters and became a familiar presence throughout the original six seasons.

Their absence from the initial announcement does not necessarily mean they will not appear. The network may announce additional performers as production approaches, but no agreements involving these actors have been publicly confirmed.

The Original Series Left a Lasting Television Legacy

When Girls premiered in April 2012, it attracted considerable attention for its portrayal of young adults trying to establish themselves in New York City.

The series combined uncomfortable comedy with difficult personal relationships, often presenting characters who were ambitious but also selfish, insecure or uncertain about their futures.

Its approach generated both praise and criticism. Supporters appreciated its willingness to depict flawed characters, while critics questioned the show’s limited representation of New York’s diverse population.

Despite those debates, Girls became one of HBO’s most recognizable comedies of the decade. The series received 19 Primetime Emmy nominations and won two awards during its original run.

It also helped establish the careers of several performers who later became prominent in film and television.

Williams went on to appear in successful horror films, including Get Out and M3GAN. Driver became an internationally recognized film actor, while Mamet, Kirke and Rannells continued working across television, film and theater.

The show’s continued availability on HBO Max has allowed newer audiences to discover its characters. That ongoing interest provides another reason for the network to revisit the series.

Production Set for Summer 2027

The new episodes are scheduled to begin filming in summer 2027, but HBO has not announced a premiere date.

The production timeline means audiences will have to wait for more information about the story and the final cast. Additional announcements may clarify which supporting characters will return and how the original friendships have developed.

Wilson’s comments offer an early indication that at least one familiar parent may be part of the reunion.

For now, her participation remains anticipated rather than formally confirmed by HBO. The actress has made clear that she welcomes another opportunity to work with Dunham and Williams.

With the original five central performers committed and Apatow returning to the production team, the revival is moving forward as a continuation of the series rather than a complete reboot.

The next major development will be the start of production in 2027, when the returning characters begin a new chapter ten years after their original television story ended.
