The actors will portray two longtime fishing partners in a film about a dramatic 2013 Atlantic Ocean rescue, with Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker Orlando von Einsiedel directing.

Josh Brolin and Jeremy Renner are joining forces for A Speck in the Sea, a survival thriller based on the true story of a fisherman who spent more than 12 hours stranded in the Atlantic Ocean. The film will reunite the two actors for their fourth credited feature-film collaboration, following their appearances in Marvel productions and the 2025 mystery Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.

Brolin will portray Montauk lobster fisherman John Aldridge, while Renner will play his longtime friend and fishing partner Anthony Sosinski. The story follows Aldridge’s fight to survive after falling overboard during a nighttime fishing trip and the enormous rescue operation launched when his disappearance was discovered.

According to Deadline, Oscar-winning filmmaker Orlando von Einsiedel will direct the project from a screenplay by Jeff Pope. Legendary’s international sales company 193 is introducing the film to buyers at the American Film Market, although a theatrical release date has not been announced.

A Real-Life Survival Story From the Atlantic Ocean

The film is based on an extraordinary rescue that took place off Long Island, New York, on July 24, 2013. Aldridge was working aboard the 44-foot commercial lobster boat Anna Mary when an accident sent him into the ocean in the early morning darkness.

The fisherman was attempting to move a cooler when its handle broke, throwing him backward and over the stern. He was alone on deck at the time, and the boat continued moving while he struggled in the water.

Aldridge had no life jacket or reliable way to contact anyone aboard the vessel. Sosinski and another crew member were asleep below deck, leaving them unaware that their fishing partner had disappeared.

The accident happened roughly 40 miles offshore, placing Aldridge in an isolated stretch of the Atlantic. He faced exhaustion, exposure and the frightening possibility that nobody would find him before he lost the strength to stay afloat.

With few options available, Aldridge improvised a remarkable survival technique using his rubber fishing boots. He removed them, trapped air inside and positioned them beneath his arms to help keep his head above the water.

The makeshift flotation devices allowed him to conserve energy while waiting for rescue. He also used nearby fishing equipment when possible to help remain afloat.

The fisherman later described watching boats and aircraft pass without noticing him. His experience became an example of how quickly an ordinary commercial fishing trip can turn into a life-threatening emergency.

Jeremy Renner Portrays the Friend Who Helped Save Him

While Aldridge struggled to survive, his fishing partners began searching for him. When Sosinski and the other crew member discovered he was missing, they alerted authorities and helped launch a major rescue operation.

The U.S. Coast Guard coordinated the response with local fishing crews and other maritime partners. Helicopters, patrol boats and commercial vessels joined the search across a large section of the Atlantic.

The Coast Guard later reported that its operation involved a search area exceeding 1,100 square miles. The effort required coordination among multiple units and civilian volunteers who understood the fishing grounds around Montauk.

After hours of searching, an MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Cape Cod spotted Aldridge in the water. A rescue swimmer was lowered from the aircraft and brought him to safety.

Aldridge was eventually rescued more than 12 hours after falling overboard. He was taken to a hospital in Massachusetts for treatment and released the following day.

CBS News reported at the time that Aldridge credited his rubber boots with helping him survive. The incident attracted national attention because of the length of time he remained in open water and the difficulty of locating one person in such a large search area.

The Coast Guard later recognized members of Station Montauk for their work during the rescue. Its commendation also acknowledged the contributions of local fishermen and other community members who assisted the operation.

The Fishermen Later Told Their Story in a Book

The events inspired A Speck in the Sea: A Story of Survival and Rescue, a nonfiction book written by John Aldridge and Anthony Sosinski and published in 2017.

The book recounts the accident from the perspectives of the fisherman in the water and the people organizing the rescue. It also explores the longtime friendship between the two men and their lives in the Montauk fishing community.

That relationship provides an important foundation for the film adaptation. While Aldridge’s experience creates the physical survival story, Sosinski’s efforts offer a parallel account of determination and uncertainty.

The production is expected to draw on those two perspectives, although filmmakers have not released a detailed scene-by-scene description of the screenplay.

The project’s emphasis on a real rescue also distinguishes it from fictional survival thrillers. Its central events are documented through Coast Guard records, contemporary news coverage and the fishermen’s own account.

Orlando von Einsiedel Takes the Director’s Chair

Orlando von Einsiedel brings experience documenting real-life danger and humanitarian crises to the production. The British filmmaker won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject for The White Helmets in 2017.

That documentary follows volunteer rescue workers operating in war-torn Syria. His earlier film Virunga, about conservation efforts and armed conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo, received an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature.

A Speck in the Sea gives von Einsiedel an opportunity to apply his experience with real events to a scripted feature. The film’s survival narrative also places considerable importance on realism and the relationship between its central characters.

Jeff Pope wrote the screenplay. Pope previously received an Academy Award nomination alongside Steve Coogan for writing Philomena, the 2013 drama starring Judi Dench.

Pope’s experience adapting real events provides another connection between the project and its nonfiction origins. His previous work has frequently explored personal stories shaped by larger social and historical circumstances.

Mark Bauch is producing through One Day’s Walk, while Jonathan Eirich is producing through Rideback. Both producers have received Emmy nominations for their work.

The filmmakers have emphasized the importance of their relationship with Aldridge and Sosinski as the project developed. Their involvement provides the creative team with access to the people whose experiences inspired the screenplay.

Brolin and Renner Reunite After Marvel and Knives Out

The film will bring Brolin and Renner together after several appearances in major Hollywood productions. Their most recent shared project was Rian Johnson’s Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, released in 2025.

Brolin portrayed Monsignor Jefferson Wicks in the mystery, while Renner played Nat Sharp, a member of the congregation. The film gave the actors an opportunity to appear within the same ensemble outside their superhero franchises.

Both also appeared in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers: Endgame. Brolin portrayed Thanos, while Renner played Clint Barton, better known as Hawkeye.

Brolin’s appearance in Age of Ultron was limited to a mid-credits sequence, making their involvement in that production different from a conventional shared starring role.

A Speck in the Sea places the actors at the center of a more personal story. Rather than portraying superheroes or characters within an elaborate mystery, they will play ordinary people confronting an extraordinary emergency.

Brolin and Renner Continue Busy Careers

Brolin recently appeared in Whalefall, the 2026 survival thriller adapted from Daniel Kraus’s novel. The film stars Austin Abrams as Jay Gardiner, a young diver trapped inside a sperm whale while searching for his father’s remains.

Brolin portrays Jay’s father, Mitt Gardiner, in a story that combines physical danger with a difficult family relationship. His involvement in A Speck in the Sea adds another survival-related project to his recent filmography.

The actor also appeared in Ridley Scott’s The Dog Stars and previously played Gurney Halleck in Dune and Dune: Part Two. He is associated with the forthcoming third Dune film and has been linked to another installment of the Sicario franchise.

Renner continues to lead the Paramount+ crime drama Mayor of Kingstown, portraying Mike McLusky. The streaming service has confirmed that its fifth and final season will premiere January 15, 2027.

Renner has received two Academy Award nominations, for The Hurt Locker and The Town. Brolin received a supporting actor nomination for his performance in Milk.

Both performers have extensive experience in action films and character-driven dramas, which makes their involvement particularly relevant to a story requiring physical intensity and emotional restraint.

Release Plans Have Not Been Announced

Legendary’s 193 is handling international sales for A Speck in the Sea at the American Film Market. CAA Media Finance and WME Independent are representing the film’s North American rights.

The sales process is an important step toward securing distribution, but it does not establish when production will begin or when audiences will be able to watch the finished film.

No confirmed theatrical premiere date, streaming partner or filming schedule has been announced. Additional casting details also remain undisclosed.

The project draws its central drama from a rescue that already has a documented ending. Its challenge will be portraying the danger faced by Aldridge while giving equal attention to the people who worked to bring him home.

For now, the confirmed cast, director and producing team provide the clearest indication of the film’s direction. Further information about production and distribution is expected to emerge as the project moves through the film market.
