The Oscar-winning actor will play a terminally ill former detective seeking redemption in an untitled Amazon MGM Studios film scheduled for theaters on October 1, 2027.

Denzel Washington will star in a new crime thriller directed by Christopher McQuarrie, bringing together two established Hollywood figures for a story about family, guilt and a dangerous past. Amazon MGM Studios and Scott Stuber’s United Artists have approved the untitled project, which is scheduled to open in theaters on October 1, 2027.

The film follows a former police detective serving a life sentence who learns he has terminal brain cancer. After receiving compassionate release with approximately six months to live, he returns home hoping to repair his relationship with his estranged daughter and meet a grandson he never knew existed.

His attempt to reconnect with his family becomes complicated when events from his past threaten the new life he hopes to establish. Washington will play the central character, with McQuarrie directing from a screenplay by Scott Barkan and Gregg Zehentner.

A Crime Thriller Built Around a Family Reunion

The story places Washington in the role of a former police officer whose criminal history has left him separated from his family. His terminal diagnosis gives him a limited opportunity to confront the damage caused by his earlier decisions.

The compassionate release arrangement allows the character to leave prison before completing his sentence because of his medical condition. Instead of focusing on freedom alone, the story follows his efforts to reconnect with the daughter he abandoned.

Meeting his grandson introduces another element to the relationship. The former detective must face the reality that an entire generation of his family has grown up without knowing him.

The screenplay also promises a dangerous complication connected to his earlier life. Although the studio has not revealed the nature of that threat, the premise establishes a conflict between the character’s desire for redemption and the consequences of his past.

The combination of family drama and criminal suspense fits Washington’s established screen career. He has frequently portrayed complicated characters whose professional abilities and personal histories place them in difficult moral situations.

The film previously circulated under the working title The Frame, according to entertainment industry reporting. However, Amazon MGM Studios has not announced a final title.

Christopher McQuarrie Moves Beyond Mission: Impossible

The project represents another major directing assignment for McQuarrie, whose recent career has been closely associated with Tom Cruise and the Mission: Impossible franchise.

McQuarrie directed Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Fallout, Dead Reckoning and The Final Reckoning. His work on those films established him as a filmmaker known for complicated action sequences, international settings and suspenseful storytelling.

His association with Cruise also includes Jack Reacher, which McQuarrie wrote and directed in 2012. The two have maintained a long creative partnership across several major Hollywood productions.

The Washington project gives McQuarrie an opportunity to direct a leading actor with a different performance style while working within the crime thriller genre.

Although McQuarrie is strongly associated with large-scale action films, his earlier career includes important work as a screenwriter. He won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for The Usual Suspects, the 1995 crime mystery directed by Bryan Singer.

That film became known for its complex narrative and memorable final revelations. Its success helped establish McQuarrie’s reputation for carefully constructed stories involving criminals, deception and conflicting accounts of events.

His experience with those subjects could be particularly relevant to the Washington thriller, whose central character must confront an unresolved criminal past.

McQuarrie is also developing other projects outside his long-running collaboration with Cruise. Reports have connected him to a film adaptation of the Battlefield video game franchise involving Michael B. Jordan.

Another project under development is King Conan, which would reunite Arnold Schwarzenegger with the character from his earlier fantasy films. Neither project has a confirmed release date.

Washington Continues a Busy Film Career

Washington’s involvement comes after several recent acting assignments across film and theater.

In 2025, he returned to Broadway in a production of William Shakespeare’s Othello, appearing opposite Jake Gyllenhaal. The production marked another major stage role for Washington, whose career includes acclaimed performances in both classical drama and contemporary films.

He also reunited with director Spike Lee for Highest 2 Lowest, a crime thriller inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low. The film continued a working relationship that previously produced Malcolm X, Inside Man, Mo’ Better Blues and He Got Game.

Washington has won two Academy Awards during his career. He received Best Supporting Actor for Glory and Best Actor for Training Day.

His performances have frequently combined authority with characters facing personal or ethical conflicts. The new thriller appears designed to draw on those qualities while placing greater emphasis on a father attempting to repair his family relationships.

Washington is also attached to The Take, a Netflix film previously known as Here Comes the Flood. The project features Robert Pattinson and Daisy Edgar-Jones and is expected to arrive in 2027.

That production adds to an increasingly busy schedule for Washington as he approaches another major theatrical release.

Hannibal Film Reportedly Delayed

The new project follows difficulties involving Washington’s planned reunion with director Antoine Fuqua on a Netflix film about Hannibal Barca, the Carthaginian general who led an army across the Alps during the Second Punic War.

Washington had been attached to portray Hannibal, with Fuqua directing. The pair previously collaborated on Training Day, The Equalizer films and the 2016 remake of The Magnificent Seven.

However, the historical epic reportedly encountered financial difficulties during preproduction. Rising costs placed the project on hold, leaving uncertainty about when production might resume.

Entertainment industry reports have linked Washington’s availability for the McQuarrie thriller to the delay of the Hannibal film.

Netflix has not announced a new production date for the historical project, and the delay does not necessarily mean it has been permanently canceled.

The new thriller provides Washington with another leading role while the future of the Hannibal production remains unsettled.

United Artists Assembles Experienced Production Team

The thriller is being developed through Amazon MGM Studios and United Artists, the production label led by Scott Stuber.

McQuarrie will serve as a producer alongside Heather McQuarrie, Stuber and Nick Nesbitt. Other producers include Joseph Restaino of Hungry Bull Productions, Reza Moheet and Norman Aladjem of Mainstay Entertainment, Katia Washington and Tommy Harper.

Tony Stopperan, Tim Honigman and Joe Guest are attached as executive producers.

Screenwriters Scott Barkan and Gregg Zehentner previously worked on projects including Into the Dark and Edge of Fear. Their screenplay forms the foundation of the new film, although further writing contributions have not been announced.

The production team brings together companies and individuals experienced in developing commercial thrillers and major studio projects.

Katia Washington’s involvement also adds a family connection to the production. She has previously worked behind the scenes on films including Fences, which starred and was directed by her father.

The studio has not announced the full supporting cast. The roles of the former detective’s daughter and grandson are central to the premise, but casting details for those characters remain unavailable.

Production Expected to Begin in November

The film is reportedly scheduled to begin production in November 2026 in New Jersey, giving the filmmakers approximately 11 months before the planned theatrical release.

That schedule leaves time for principal photography, editing, music and other postproduction work. However, production dates can change depending on casting, locations and other practical requirements.

The studio has already set October 1, 2027, as the theatrical release date, making the project a significant addition to Amazon MGM’s upcoming film schedule.

There is no official trailer, poster or complete cast announcement yet. The studio has also not revealed whether the film will retain its former working title.

The Washington-McQuarrie collaboration brings together an actor associated with powerful dramatic performances and a director known for detailed suspense and action storytelling.

Their immediate challenge will be translating a story about a dying former detective into a thriller that gives equal importance to its family relationships and criminal mystery.

With the screenplay and leading creative team in place, the next major developments will be the announcement of additional cast members and the start of filming. The planned October 2027 release gives audiences a specific date for the first completed collaboration between Washington and McQuarrie.
