The undefeated Hurricanes claim the No. 1 spot ahead of Georgia, Utah and Indiana, while 10 SEC teams enter the opening rankings and several controversial selections raise questions

Miami has claimed the No. 1 position in the first College Football Playoff rankings of the 2026 season, leading a field dominated by the Southeastern Conference. The selection committee released its initial Top 25 on Tuesday, November 3, placing the undefeated Hurricanes ahead of Georgia, Utah and defending national champion Indiana.

The rankings cover games played through October 31 and provide the first official picture of the race for the 12-team national championship tournament. The SEC leads all conferences with 10 ranked teams, including five in the top 10, while the Big Ten follows with six and the Big 12 has five.

Miami enters the rankings with an 8-0 record, one of just three remaining undefeated teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Georgia is second at 7-1, followed by undefeated Utah at No. 3 and Indiana at No. 4 with an 8-1 record.

Alabama rounds out the top five despite having two losses, one of several committee decisions that attracted immediate attention. Kentucky, Texas, UCLA, BYU and Ole Miss complete the top 10.

Miami Earns Top Ranking After Undefeated Start

Miami’s position reflects its consistent performance through the first eight games of the season. The Hurricanes have faced relatively few close contests, with games against Florida State and North Carolina providing their toughest challenges.

According to the NCAA’s analysis of the opening rankings, Miami has established a strong position with its undefeated record and a victory over nationally ranked Wake Forest. The Hurricanes have also maintained their place atop the Associated Press poll, giving them support from both media voters and the playoff committee.

Miami’s next test could substantially affect its standing. The Hurricanes travel to face No. 11 Notre Dame on November 7 in a matchup with important implications for both teams.

Georgia holds second place despite losing to Auburn earlier in the season. The Bulldogs have strengthened their position with victories over Alabama and Florida, both of which appear in the committee’s Top 25.

Utah is ranked third after winning its first eight games, including a victory over No. 17 Houston. The Utes have another major challenge ahead when they host ninth-ranked BYU in a conference matchup.

Indiana occupies fourth place after winning the previous national championship. The Hoosiers have an 8-1 record, with their only defeat coming against Ohio State, creating one of the more notable questions surrounding the committee’s opening selections.

SEC Leads the Rankings With 10 Teams

The Southeastern Conference has the largest representation in the rankings, accounting for 40% of the Top 25. Georgia leads the conference at No. 2, followed by Alabama at No. 5, Kentucky at No. 6, Texas at No. 7 and Ole Miss at No. 10.

Tennessee ranks 13th, LSU is 14th and Missouri is 18th. South Carolina enters at No. 21 despite having three losses, while Florida holds the 24th position with the same 5-3 record.

The SEC’s presence extends across nearly the entire rankings, reflecting the committee’s evaluation of the conference’s strength and the quality of opponents its teams have faced. Several of those teams also have important conference matchups remaining.

Alabama’s placement has been particularly controversial because the Crimson Tide have a 6-2 record and sit eight spots above Tennessee. The Volunteers also have two losses but defeated Alabama by 16 points in their head-to-head meeting.

Associated Press reporting highlighted the disagreement surrounding that decision, along with the committee’s treatment of Notre Dame and Ohio State. Selection committee chair Hunter Yurachek explained that head-to-head results receive particular attention when teams are being evaluated within the same four-team ranking group.

That approach can produce results that differ from a simple comparison of records or individual matchups. The committee also evaluates strength of schedule, performances against common opponents and other measures of team quality.

Indiana, UCLA and Ohio State Highlight Big Ten Questions

The Big Ten has six teams in the initial rankings, led by Indiana at No. 4. UCLA follows at No. 8 despite remaining undefeated, while Ohio State sits 12th after suffering its second loss of the season.

Iowa is ranked 19th, Southern California holds 20th and Oregon enters at No. 23. Oregon’s inclusion provides another ranked opponent for UCLA’s schedule, although the Bruins remain below several teams that already have losses.

Ohio State’s placement presents a different issue for the committee. The Buckeyes defeated Indiana earlier in the season but are ranked eight places below the Hoosiers following their latest loss to Southern California.

Indiana’s higher ranking reflects the committee’s assessment of the teams’ complete records rather than their head-to-head result alone. Ohio State also faces increased pressure because its current position leaves it outside the projected playoff field.

The committee’s rankings are not simply a list of the teams with the fewest losses. They are intended to evaluate which teams have performed best against their overall schedules, an approach that can lead to disagreements when records and individual results point in different directions.

Notre Dame Faces Pressure Despite Top-12 Ranking

Notre Dame enters the rankings at No. 11 with a 7-1 record, considerably lower than its No. 4 position in the Associated Press poll. The Fighting Irish have not defeated a team currently ranked in the committee’s Top 25, while their loss came against BYU.

Under the 2026 playoff qualification rules, Notre Dame can receive an automatic berth if it finishes among the 12 highest-ranked teams. Its current position therefore places the independent program inside the projected tournament field, but with little room for another disappointing result.

Saturday’s game against Miami provides Notre Dame with an opportunity to earn a major victory against the committee’s highest-ranked team. A defeat could make its remaining path more difficult, particularly with several other playoff contenders scheduled to face ranked opponents.

BYU, meanwhile, enters at No. 9 with a 7-1 record. Its victory over Notre Dame strengthens its position, although a loss to unranked UCF has prevented the Cougars from joining Utah among the undefeated teams.

Boise State Holds Key Position in Projected Playoff

Boise State enters the rankings at No. 25 with a 7-1 record, making the Broncos the highest-ranked team from the Group of 6 conferences. Their position is important because the 2026 playoff format reserves an automatic berth for the highest-ranked team from that group.

As a result, Boise State would receive the No. 12 seed if the playoff field were determined using the November 3 rankings. Ohio State, despite being ranked 12th nationally, would be excluded from that projected bracket.

The current format provides automatic qualification for the champions of the ACC, Big 12, Big Ten and SEC, along with the highest-ranked Group of 6 team. Notre Dame also qualifies automatically if it finishes in the top 12, while the remaining places are determined by the committee’s rankings.

The four highest-ranked teams receive first-round byes, regardless of whether they win their conference championships. Based on the first rankings, Miami, Georgia, Utah and Indiana would advance directly to the quarterfinals.

A projected first round would feature Boise State at Alabama, BYU at UCLA, Notre Dame at Kentucky and Ole Miss at Texas. These pairings are only a snapshot of the current standings and will change as the regular season and conference championships unfold.

Major Matchups Could Reshape the Rankings

Several games scheduled for November 7 involve teams currently ranked in the top 15. Miami visits Notre Dame, Georgia faces Ole Miss, Utah meets BYU and Alabama takes on LSU.

Kentucky also plays Tennessee, while Texas faces Missouri and Ohio State meets Oregon. The number of ranked matchups creates opportunities for major changes when the committee releases its next standings.

The selection committee will issue five additional rankings, with the final list scheduled for Sunday, December 6. That announcement will establish the official playoff field, determine the seeding and identify which teams receive first-round home games.

The four first-round games will take place December 18 and 19, followed by quarterfinals on December 30 and January 1. The semifinals are scheduled for January 14 and 15, with the national championship game set for January 25, 2027, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Miami begins the process at No. 1, but its upcoming visit to Notre Dame could provide the first major test of that position. With several conferences facing important matchups, the committee’s November 10 rankings could look significantly different from the opening Top 25.
