Five years after a deal that valued her production company at about $900 million, Witherspoon is partnering with French entertainment group Mediawan to reclaim Hello Sunshine and expand its global reach.
Reese Witherspoon is buying back her production company, Hello Sunshine, in partnership with French entertainment group Mediawan, five years after selling a controlling stake in a deal that valued the business at approximately $900 million. The acquisition, announced October 13, 2026, returns the actress and producer to a more prominent ownership role in the company she founded to champion stories about women.
The agreement transfers Hello Sunshine from Candle Media, the Blackstone-backed entertainment company that acquired a majority stake in 2021. Witherspoon is investing alongside Mediawan, which operates an international network of nearly 100 production labels.
Financial terms were not officially disclosed. However, industry reporting indicates that the purchase price is substantially lower than the valuation attached to the earlier transaction.
The deal brings Hello Sunshine into a larger international entertainment group while preserving its recognizable brand and creative mission. It also offers Witherspoon a new opportunity to shape the company’s direction during a period of significant change in Hollywood.
A Major Change From the $900 Million Deal
Witherspoon established Hello Sunshine in 2016 with entrepreneur Seth Rodsky. The company focused on developing film, television and other entertainment projects centered on women’s experiences.
Its early success attracted investors during a period when streaming platforms were spending heavily to secure original programming and established creative talent.
In August 2021, Candle Media acquired a controlling stake in Hello Sunshine through a transaction that valued the company at approximately $900 million.
Candle Media was led by former Disney executives Kevin Mayer and Tom Staggs, with financial backing from investment firm Blackstone.
The investment reflected expectations that Hello Sunshine could expand beyond television and film into books, podcasts, lifestyle businesses and other forms of entertainment.
Witherspoon remained actively involved after the sale, continuing her work as an actress, producer and public representative of the company.
Five years later, the ownership arrangement has changed substantially.
Axios reported that Witherspoon and Mediawan agreed to purchase Hello Sunshine for a sum in the low-to-mid-eight-figure range, citing sources familiar with the transaction.
That reported price would represent a dramatic reduction from the company’s 2021 valuation. However, the earlier figure valued the business as a whole, while the exact ownership interests and other financial arrangements involved in the new transaction have not been publicly detailed.
The reported figures therefore cannot be used alone to calculate a precise investment loss or percentage decline in company value.
Witherspoon Calls Acquisition a Homecoming
Witherspoon described the new partnership as an opportunity to continue the creative mission that inspired Hello Sunshine’s founding.
In the acquisition announcement, she praised Mediawan for supporting independent production companies while providing access to additional resources.
“Mediawan has built a global, independent studio by putting creators first,” Witherspoon said. “That has always been my vision for Hello Sunshine.”
She said investing alongside Mediawan represented a natural next stage for the business.
Witherspoon also expressed appreciation for the company’s previous investors, including Blackstone and Candle Media, and recognized the early support of Peter Chernin and Jesse Jacobs.
The actress described the acquisition as a homecoming, reflecting her connection to the company and its original purpose.
Rodsky will join the company’s board alongside Witherspoon and representatives from Mediawan, according to the announcement.
The new governance arrangement gives the founders a continuing role in overseeing Hello Sunshine’s future, although the companies have not publicly disclosed the exact ownership percentages.
Hello Sunshine Built Its Reputation Around Women’s Stories
Hello Sunshine has become associated with successful television and film projects featuring complex female characters and stories.
Its productions include HBO’s Big Little Lies, Apple’s The Morning Show and Amazon’s Daisy Jones & The Six.
The company also produced Little Fires Everywhere, starring Witherspoon and Kerry Washington, and the 2022 film adaptation of Where the Crawdads Sing.
These projects helped establish Hello Sunshine as a recognizable name among entertainment businesses that specialize in literary adaptations and female-led storytelling.
Another important part of the company is Reese’s Book Club, which Witherspoon launched in 2017.
The book club promotes selected titles through an online community and has helped introduce millions of readers to authors whose work might otherwise receive less mainstream attention.
Several selections have also become candidates for film and television adaptations, creating a connection between the company’s publishing interests and production operations.
According to Axios, Hello Sunshine said Reese’s Book Club reaches approximately 6.2 million readers and has helped generate roughly $900 million in United States book sales.
Those figures were provided by the company and should not be confused with its acquisition valuation or annual revenue.
The book club offers Hello Sunshine something particularly valuable in the entertainment industry: a direct relationship with an established audience.
Rather than depending entirely on streaming platforms or television networks, the company can identify stories that already attract readers and develop them for additional formats.
Mediawan Expands Its International Entertainment Business
Mediawan was founded in France in 2015 and has grown into a major independent producer of film and television content.
Its portfolio includes production companies operating across Europe, North America and other international markets.
Among its brands are Plan B Entertainment, Chernin Entertainment, See-Saw Films, Kinetic Content and Drama Republic.
The group has connections to productions including Adolescence, Slow Horses, Call My Agent! and Love Is Blind.
Mediawan co-founder and chief executive Pierre-Antoine Capton praised Hello Sunshine’s record of producing high-quality entertainment and establishing strong relationships with audiences.
Capton said the company’s identity and Witherspoon’s creative leadership would strengthen Mediawan’s existing network.
He also emphasized that Mediawan’s business model involves giving production companies access to larger pools of talent, intellectual property and distribution opportunities while maintaining their individual identities.
For Hello Sunshine, joining that network could create opportunities to develop projects with international partners and reach viewers in additional markets.
The companies said they intend to explore different storytelling formats and distribution methods as part of the partnership.
However, they did not announce specific new films, television series or production schedules alongside the acquisition.
Why Candle Media Sold the Company
The transaction also reflects changes in the entertainment industry’s financial environment since 2021.
During the height of competition among streaming services, investment firms and media companies spent heavily to acquire production businesses with established creative talent and valuable programming rights.
Candle Media pursued that strategy with support from Blackstone, acquiring Hello Sunshine and other entertainment companies.
However, streaming platforms have since become more selective about production spending as they place greater emphasis on profitability.
Candle Media has also reconsidered its original plan to build a large integrated entertainment company.
Axios reported that the business has increasingly focused on operating or selling individual brands rather than maintaining all its acquisitions within one expanding corporate structure.
Earlier in 2026, Candle Media sold a majority stake in digital media company ATTN: back to its founders.
The Hello Sunshine transaction represents another significant step in that restructuring.
Although reports suggest the new sale price is far below the 2021 valuation, Candle Media has not publicly provided enough financial information to establish the full outcome of its investment.
Legal Advisers Confirm the Transaction
International law firm Gibson Dunn confirmed on October 14 that it advised Mediawan on the acquisition partnership.
The firm’s corporate team was led by partner Sarah Graham, with entertainment advice provided by partner Steve Tsoneff.
Its legal work also included tax, employee benefits and other transaction-related matters.
The announcement provides independent confirmation of the firm’s involvement, although it does not disclose the purchase price or detailed ownership structure.
For Witherspoon, the acquisition means returning Hello Sunshine to a closer relationship with its founder while gaining the resources of an established international media company.
The next stage will depend on how effectively Hello Sunshine develops new projects, maintains its audience relationships and expands beyond its existing entertainment businesses.
Witherspoon and Mediawan have confirmed their intention to preserve Hello Sunshine’s creative identity while exploring new opportunities. Specific details about upcoming productions and the financial structure of their partnership have yet to be announced.
