Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca stands by the club after an independent commission finds it guilty of 114 financial rule violations. City is appealing the ruling and could face major penalties.

Enzo Maresca has voiced his complete trust in Manchester City despite the club being found guilty of serious financial rule violations by the Premier League. An independent commission upheld 114 out of 115 charges brought against City over a nine-year period from 2009 to 2018. The club was found to have artificially inflated revenues and reduced costs through what the panel called ‘sham’ contracts with sponsors.

Maresca said he had spoken personally with club officials and that he believed in the leadership team according to CBS Sports. He emphasized his commitment to the club but stopped short of guaranteeing he would stay if City were relegated to a lower division. Maresca recalled how he had won the Championship with Leicester and suggested he would be ready for any level of football.

He also confirmed that Pep Guardiola who previously managed City is expected to attend City’s Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain. Guardiola had previously stated he would leave the club if it was found to have lied to him during his tenure. Maresca did not offer a firm guarantee that he would remain in charge under such circumstances but expressed pride in his current role.

The club is preparing for a difficult match at Anfield against Liverpool where fans are expected to show strong disapproval. City has appealed against the decision and the club continues to defend its actions.

Maresca said he understands that fans will be upset and that the situation carries significant weight. He also acknowledged the pressure of upcoming games against Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest which are likely to be similarly hostile.

Despite the controversy Maresca remains focused on his players and the team’s performance. He insisted that City’s achievements including the treble-winning season of 2022/23 are not tainted by the financial ruling. Maresca said he joined City because he trusted the people and the club’s direction.

He added that there is no other club in the world where he would prefer to be.

The former assistant manager of City’s treble-winning squad emphasized his calm approach and deep connection with the organization. He also pointed out that players like Enzo Fernandez have experience dealing with high-pressure situations.

Maresca’s demeanor during the press conference was steady and composed even as he acknowledged the seriousness of the situation.

The independent commission published its decision on September 29 and City has since lodged an appeal. Potential punishments include heavy fines and points deductions or even expulsion from the Premier League. No final sanction has been announced.

The appeal process could extend into 2027 and leave uncertainty hanging over the club’s future. For now Maresca remains confident that City can defend its record while continuing to compete for trophies.
