Wigan Warriors Claim League Leaders’ Shield with Dominant Win Over Catalans

St Helens vs Wigan 2009
By Digital News Editorial Team on September 11, 2026

Wigan Warriors have been crowned League Leaders for 2026 after defeating Catalans 50-12 at the Brick Community Stadium. The match came just a day after Sir Billy Boston’s funeral service was held at the same venue. Boston died on Aug. 24 at age 92 and became the first rugby league player to be knighted in 2025. Liam Farrell made his return for what has been announced as his final season with the club.

Leeds had gone into the evening with an outside chance of snatching the shield but were shockingly defeated 18-12 at home by lowly Hull FC, according to rugbyleaguehub.com. Elsewhere, Leigh lost their chance to secure a home playoff game after being defeated 19-8 by Wakefield. This outcome means Wakefield will host Leigh at DIY Kitchens Stadium on Friday and Warrington will face Hull KR at Halliwell Jones Stadium on Saturday. Sky Sports confirmed the elimination games will be played on Sept. 18 and Sept. 19.

Meanwhile, Willie Peters’ world champs were weakened for their match against St Helens and lost 36-12. The regular season concludes Saturday with Huddersfield hosting Castleford.

The performances of the young players in certain periods of the year have put Wigan in this position, and they’ll continue to draw on them, according to a report from wigantoday.net. There were games in which Wigan nearly lost, including one at Hull FC and another against Huddersfield. Manager Matt Peet noted that Huddersfield and Castleford had beaten Wigan earlier in the season. He emphasized that the team’s win in the Cup game during that time was often overlooked. Peet said he thought the match against Catalans was a good win and that he wanted to take advantage of the opportunity. He added that Catalans showed spirit and physicality in their effort.

The drama of the season’s final stretch was minimal as Wigan dominated the match, aol.co.uk reported. Despite scoring 50 points, it was not a flawless performance by the home side. The victory was essentially decided last weekend when Wigan beat Leeds at Headingley to take the Super League lead. Catalans had been struggling all season and were never expected to cause a major upset. By halftime, Wigan led 24-6, and the outcome was clear from that point onward.

Matt Peet’s team has been improving weekly, with this being their 15th consecutive league victory. With two more wins, they could complete a domestic treble, with the lowest-ranked playoff winner facing a tough challenge at Wigan. Few would argue against Wigan’s current standing as a dominant force in the league. The Shield is Wigan’s second trophy of 2026 after the club won the Challenge Cup in May.

The League Leaders’ Shield is often seen as less important than other trophies, but Wigan values it highly. Peet said the trophy represents the club’s consistency and pride. This marks the ninth major trophy Peet has won in just five seasons at Wigan. Wigan made short work of Catalans and the occasion itself. As news spread that Leeds had lost at home, Wigan’s lead grew to 18 points by halftime. Peet was able to rest key players like Field and Bevan French in the final quarter. The team had a break before their playoff semi-final, giving all stars time off for two weeks. Wigan and Leeds now have byes through the first round of the playoffs.

The trophy was lifted shortly after full time, with Farrell presenting it to the team. A song by Tina Turner played in the background as Wigan completed their journey toward a possible treble.
