Newcastle United Defeat Tottenham 2-0 in Premier League Victory

Newcastle United v Zulte Waragem, St James' Park
By Digital News Editorial Team on August 29, 2026

Newcastle United claimed their first Premier League win under manager Matthias Jaissle with a 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The match saw goals from Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa in the second half, helping Newcastle secure a much-needed win after a difficult start to the season.

Newcastle had made a promising start under Jaissle despite losing key players like Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon this summer, according to 101greatgoals.com. The team had drawn 2-2 with Liverpool in their opening match before defeating West Brom 3-2 in the EFL Cup.

This victory was especially sweet for Newcastle as it came against a Spurs side that had brought in several new signings this summer. Tottenham had lost their opening match 3-0 to Brentford and then suffered another defeat at home to Newcastle, according to a report from Crypto Briefing. The Spurs team had also won a Carabao Cup match against Charlton Athletic 5-1, but their Premier League performance has been poor.

New signing Omar Marmoush made his debut for Tottenham, joining the club on loan from Manchester City. Despite spending heavily over the summer, Tottenham have yet to score any goals in the Premier League this season. Tottenham’s poor start has left them at 20th in the Premier League table with zero points and five goals conceded.

Anthony Elanga opened the scoring for Newcastle in the 62nd minute after a pass from midfielder Nico Gonzalez. Elanga’s goal came after a well-worked play involving Amar Dedic and a cross from Gonzalez.

Yoane Wissa doubled Newcastle’s lead shortly after with an instinctive finish from a corner kick. Wissa’s goal was assisted by substitute Nick Woltemade, who headed down the ball for the striker.

Former Tottenham midfielder Sandro Tonali, who joined Spurs in a £100 million move, was on the pitch but not involved in the goal. Tottenham struggled to create meaningful chances throughout the match, with Newcastle’s goalkeeper Lukás Hornícek making several key saves. The Spurs defense was tested by shots from Mathys Tel and Pedro Porro, both of whom were denied by Hornícek.

Newcastle had possession throughout the match but were mostly able to hold off Tottenham’s attacks. Tottenham tried to mount a comeback in the second half, with Omar Marmoush and Dominic Solanke going close to scoring, en.as.com reported. Despite efforts from several players, including Andy Robertson and Jan Paul van Hecke, Tottenham could not break through Newcastle’s defense.

The match ended with Newcastle maintaining their unbeaten record under manager Matthias Jaissle. Tottenham’s start to the season has raised serious concerns about their ability to compete in the Premier League this year. Manager Roberto De Zerbi faces a difficult task in finding structure and results for a team that has struggled to score goals.

The club’s investment in players like Savio and Marmoush has not yet yielded success on the pitch. Newcastle fans were pleased with the result and the performance of their team under new leadership.

The victory was a sign that Newcastle may be on the right track under Jaissle’s guidance.
