Atletico Madrid have completed the acquisition of Argentina defender Cristian Gabriel ‘Cuti’ Romero from Tottenham Hotspur. The 28-year-old center-back has signed a contract that runs through June 30, 2031. Romero brings significant experience to the team’s defensive line due to his physical presence and leadership qualities.

He was born in Cordoba on April 27, 1998, and began his professional career with Club Atletico Belgrano in August 2016, according to The Free Press Journal. Romero moved to Europe in 2018 when he joined Genoa before signing with Juventus in 2019. During his time at Juventus, he played on loan at Genoa during the 2019/20 season and then at Atalanta in the following campaign.

He was named Serie A’s best defender during his tenure with Atalanta, according to a report from Yardbarker. Romero later joined Tottenham on loan in 2021/22, with the Premier League club making his move permanent at the end of that season. He made 156 appearances for Tottenham over five seasons, scoring 13 goals and providing seven assists.

Romero captained Spurs during the last campaign, making 32 appearances in that role, Mathrubhumi reported. He had previously played for Genoa and Juventus after leaving his boyhood club Belgrano in 2018. At the international level, Romero has earned 58 caps for Argentina since his debut in June 2021.

He was a key member of the national squad that won the 2021 and 2024 Copa America titles and the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Romero also participated in Argentina’s campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they finished as runners-up. His transfer to Atletico Madrid is reported to have cost £34 million, or about $46 million.
