Singer Céline Dion took the stage in Paris for the first time in six years, beginning her new 16-show residency at the Plenitude Arena in Nanterre. The event marked her return to a full-length concert nearly four years after she announced she was dealing with a rare and painful medical condition. Reuters reported that the September 12 performance was her first full concert after a six-year absence.

Dion opened the evening with the French song ‘On Ne Change Pas,’ which translates to ‘we don’t change’ in English. She was visibly moved during the performance, with tears in her eyes as she spoke to the audience. Dion told the crowd that she had promised herself not to cry, but admitted it was hard to hold back emotions.

She expressed gratitude for the audience’s presence and said she hoped they would fall in love with Paris just as she had. Dion emphasized how meaningful it was to be back on stage after making a personal promise to herself. She performed her iconic hit ‘My Heart Will Go On,’ a song from the soundtrack of the movie Titanic. Born in Quebec, a French-speaking province of Canada, Dion has deep ties to France and is widely beloved there.

Her concerts have been fully sold out, and they are expected to generate millions of dollars for the local economy. The economic effect may be much larger than that. Choose Paris Region estimates the full series of concerts could generate between 500 million and 800 million euros for the region, according to Le Monde. About 800,000 concertgoers are expected across the 16 shows in 2026 and another 10 shows in May 2027.

Dion revealed in 2022 that she had been diagnosed with stiff person syndrome, a rare neurological disorder causing muscle stiffness and spasms. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke says the condition can cause stiff muscles in the torso, arms and legs along with muscle spasms triggered by noise, touch or emotional distress.

Her last tour was interrupted by the global pandemic in 2020. Dion’s official biography says her last two Courage World Tour concerts before the shutdown were held in Newark, New Jersey, on March 7 and 8, 2020.

She previously performed at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony in July 2024, surprising fans with her appearance. Dion sang Édith Piaf’s ‘Hymne à l’amour’ from the Eiffel Tower during the ceremony.

The moment was emotional for many attendees, including fans who paid high prices for their tickets. One fan described the experience as deeply moving and said it felt like seeing Céline up close in person. She also shared that she was ready to return to the stage after a long period of recovery and reflection.

The concert was part of a 16-show Paris residency running through October 17, with 10 additional concerts scheduled for May 2027.
