Billy Joel has revealed details about his recent medical treatment and how it has affected his ability to perform live. The singer shared an update on his health in a recent interview with SiriusXM’s The Billy Joel Channel. Joel was diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus, a condition involving fluid buildup in the brain.

He described feeling unsteady on his feet and experiencing a rocking sensation, which made him aware of his declining balance, according to Entertainment Weekly. At first, he was reluctant to have treatment for the condition. Joel said he initially thought he would not go through with the procedure.

However, after learning more about how the treatment could help with his symptoms, he decided to move forward. He explained that he did not want to lose his mental clarity or memory. Joel underwent brain surgery to implant a shunt, which helped improve his condition.

The procedure was intended to reduce pressure in his brain caused by fluid buildup. He said that the surgery has improved his balance and overall well-being. Joel also noted that loud concerts had been causing him harm, similar to a concussion each time he performed.

He realized that continuing to play at high volumes could damage his brain nerves and cause further loss of brain cells. Because of this, he decided to step back from live performances for now. Joel reassured fans that he is doing well and not going anywhere.

He emphasized that people should not worry about his health, according to a report from geo.tv. Joel had previously canceled all his upcoming shows in May 2025. His team said at the time that he was receiving excellent care and prioritizing his health.

He has not returned to full touring, though he did perform briefly in January with a tribute band, Consequence reported. Joel said he is doing physical therapy and trying to recover from the effects of his condition. He has not given a timeline for returning to regular live performances.

His most recent full concert took place on February 22nd, 2025, during which he fell on stage. Despite his ongoing recovery, Joel continues to express confidence in his future.
