Apple TV+ Series ‘Last Seen’ Explores Grief and Missing Persons with Emotional Depth

Apple TV+ will release a new six-part crime drama titled Last Seen on September 9, based on Ryan David Jahn’s novel The Dispatcher. Apple says the series will debut with two episodes, followed by one new episode each Wednesday through October 7. The project was originally announced under the title The Dispatcher before being renamed Last Seen.

The series centers around Ian Ridley, played by Patrick Brammall, an emergency dispatcher in Australia who is haunted by the disappearance of his daughter Maggie 11 years earlier. Ian has been struggling with alcoholism since Maggie vanished and is now trying to rebuild his life when he receives disturbing news about a child’s body found in the forest. The discovery of the body triggers Ian to rekindle his search for Maggie, leading him into a new emotional spiral that affects not only himself but also those around him.

The show introduces another key character in the form of Henry Reid, a religious man living off the grid with his wife and daughter Sarah, according to rogerebert.com. Sarah is played by Chloe Jean Lourdes, whose performance becomes increasingly complex as the series progresses, revealing her character’s inner turmoil and emotional conflict. The story explores how Ian’s grief impacts his relationships with his ex-wife and stepson, showing that his actions are driven by pain rather than malice, according to a report from Screen Rant.

The show’s strength lies in its focus on trauma and emotional realism rather than just plot twists or shocking revelations. While the mystery of Maggie’s disappearance is central to the story, it’s not the only thread that drives the narrative forward. The series also follows the Reid family’s isolated life and their own struggles with protecting their daughter from what they see as a dangerous outside world.

The emotional journey of the characters is deepened by how the show treats the missing child not just as a plot device but as a real person with a complex life. Supporting actors like Maxine Peake and Daniel Henshall bring depth to their roles, especially in how they reflect the emotional weight of the central storylines.

Despite its compelling premise and strong performances, some viewers may find that the show reveals too much too early in its narrative arc. The series does not shy away from showing how grief affects people differently and how trauma can shape lives over time.

While the show’s pacing and character development are mostly strong, a few secondary characters feel underdeveloped or serve more as plot tools than real people. The first episode sets up the mystery of whether the body found in the forest is Maggie’s, and how that connects to Ian’s personal journey. The series also introduces a subplot involving Henry’s brother Donald Reid, played by Daniel Henshall, who serves as both a friend to Ian and a moral compass in the story. His role becomes especially important in the middle of the series when his own choices begin to affect Ian’s investigation and the overall emotional tone. Donald is described as one of Ian’s closest friends, placing him between Ian and the Reid family as the mystery develops.

Although the show is not without its flaws, it offers a thoughtful and emotionally resonant take on missing persons cases that stands out in today’s streaming landscape. Last Seen is available to stream on Apple TV+ starting September 9, 2026. The series was adapted by writer Kris Mrksa and directed by Christian Schwochow. It was set and filmed entirely in Victoria, Australia.
