Iran has accused Qatar of capturing three of its fighter pilots after their aircraft were downed in March. The incident occurred when the Iranian jets entered Qatari airspace after an unauthorized breach of Qatari airspace, according to Doha’s air defense forces. Qatari forces issued warnings before engaging the targets after no response was received.
Iranian officials say the pilots were held incommunicado for six months without access to their families or diplomatic representatives, according to Al Jazeera. Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi posted on X that the aviators had been detained without access to legal or family support.
He also stated that Qatar’s actions were part of a broader pattern of aggression in the region.
Qatar has officially denied capturing or holding any Iranian pilots, calling the claims false and unproven.
The interception took place during retaliatory strikes following hostilities that began on February 28. A ceasefire brokered by Pakistan temporarily halted major combat operations.
However, peace framework talks collapsed in June.
Iran has made it clear that it will continue to enforce its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz until Washington accepts what it calls ‘the reality of defeat’.
The dispute over the pilots has added to growing friction between Iran and Qatar. Iran has not yet decided whether to return to negotiations with the United States.
The situation remains tense as both countries continue to take strong stances on the matter.
