Ministers Face Growing Pressure Over UK Gas Supply Risks

Ministers in the United Kingdom are beginning to recognize the increasing dangers linked to the country’s gas supply, as reliance on North Sea sources continues to fall. The government has long depended on natural gas for more than a third of its overall energy needs, with most of that coming from the North Sea. About half of the gas used in homes and businesses over the past five years came from the North Sea, while Norway provided just over a third.

Energy minister Michael Shanks has said that gas will remain important during the transition to cleaner energy sources, according to The Guardian. He emphasized that the UK must continue reducing its dependence on fossil fuels while still ensuring enough gas for heating and industry, according to a report from The Guardian.

The prime minister has suggested a pragmatic approach to North Sea oil and gas drilling, acknowledging that resources are available. However, the government is now facing a serious challenge due to declining production from North Sea fields, which currently provide about 40% of the country’s gas. Storage levels for gas are also low, and the UK has limited capacity to import more through tankers.

A warning from the energy system operator in November highlighted potential risks to supply during the next decade if key infrastructure goes offline during a cold period. That report was not final, but it signaled that ministers may have to act quickly to secure gas supplies.

The government is under pressure to make decisions about how to handle the situation, rather than just outlining options. There are around 24 million UK households that depend on gas for heating and cooking, making this issue especially urgent.

One major concern is the lack of investment in storage projects like Centrica’s Rough site in Yorkshire. The project to restore Rough has not moved forward because financial conditions do not support it, leaving the country with less gas stored for winter.

Meanwhile, storage in continental Europe — which Britain usually taps during cold months — is expected to be lower than normal due to Hormuz-related issues. The recent report also indirectly supported the approval of a new gasfield called Jackdaw, which could help ease some pressure on supply. Jackdaw is expected to contribute about 6% of current North Sea gas output and could be operational in time for the winter.

Despite concerns over optics, the government must soon decide whether to make another decision regarding Jackdaw. The situation is especially difficult because the UK has become more dependent on imports while North Sea production drops.

Ministers are now being forced to make hard choices about how to balance clean energy goals with immediate needs for gas supply. Energy system operators and industry leaders have called for swift action to avoid disruptions in the near term.

The UK’s energy infrastructure must be updated or expanded quickly if it is to meet both short-term and long-term needs. Without clear decisions, the country risks facing a difficult winter with limited gas reserves.

Shanks and other officials have stressed that the UK must prepare for years of continued reliance on gas while building a sustainable energy future. The government’s next steps will be crucial in determining how the country manages its energy transition and security.
