Peter Ruis has stepped down as the leader of John Lewis, the UK’s largest department store chain. His departure came as a surprise to many within the company and the industry, despite his recent public appearances and statements about expansion plans. Ruis had been in charge since early 2023 and was seen as a key figure in revitalizing sales for the company after years of decline. He oversaw major store renovations including those in Oxford Street, Bluewater, and Glasgow. The company said Ruis was leaving to pursue new projects, but insiders suggested he had been planning an exit for some time.

Will Kernan, a non-executive board member of the John Lewis Partnership, will take over as the new leader, according to The Guardian. Kernan has no experience managing department stores or handling brand relationships, which may present challenges for the company. Some sources believe that Ruis and the chair of the parent group, Jason Tarry, had different management styles and backgrounds, making their collaboration difficult. Retail analysts noted that despite Ruis’s efforts, the department store sector continues to face tough conditions. Ruis had led a revival of the company’s long-standing promise of never knowingly underselling, which helped improve performance during the holiday season. John Lewis reported an underlying profit increase of 29% to £58 million in a challenging market environment.

The company has also closed 16 stores during the pandemic, reflecting broader struggles in retail. There are signs that strategic disagreements may have played a role in Ruis’s departure, especially regarding investment decisions. However, it is unlikely that Tarry would have chosen Kernan as his replacement given Kernan’s lack of relevant experience.

The leadership position at John Lewis has become increasingly difficult to fill, with the role having seen frequent turnover since 2016. Ruis’s exit underscores ongoing challenges in the department store sector and raises questions about how the company will manage its future direction.

The company’s leadership change comes amid broader concerns about retail strategy and performance in a changing marketplace.

In other business news, Apple is facing supply chain challenges due to rising memory costs, which have affected its pricing strategies, according to a report from thestreet.com. The company has been trying to find cheaper sources for memory components, particularly in China, but ran into political and regulatory issues. U.S. officials have expressed concerns about sourcing from Chinese memory producers. Apple has been forced to raise prices across several of its products, including Macs, iPads, and Vision Pro headsets. The situation has led to investor concerns and a drop in Apple’s stock value.

Analysts believe that Apple’s ability to control costs is being tested by the global memory supply shortage. The memory component’s share of an iPhone Pro’s cost has risen from about 10% to nearly 34%. This shift highlights the increasing complexity of managing supply chains and pricing strategies in consumer electronics.

Seven senators have urged Apple to stop using memory from companies designated as Chinese military-linked. The issue has drawn attention not just for business reasons but also for national security concerns. Apple’s past experience with similar suppliers shows that the company is aware of the risks involved.

The situation reflects broader tensions in global tech supply chains and how political decisions affect corporate strategy. Both John Lewis and Apple are dealing with strategic pressures that highlight the importance of balancing efficiency and long-term planning in business, Wikinews reported.

In both cases, leadership changes and shifting market dynamics are forcing companies to reevaluate their core strategies. John Lewis’s new leadership will need to navigate the complex challenges of retail in a changing economy. Apple’s experience shows how quickly supply chain disruptions can impact even the most powerful tech firms.
