Eli Roth had previously claimed that a cartoon interlude in the film was drawn by his own hand, paying homage to classic early animation styles. The internet quickly noticed the use of a visual effects company called Dark Half in the credits, which raised questions about the original statement.
Roth later clarified that AI was used only in a few scenes of the movie, not as much as many had assumed. He had earlier described drawing the animation himself and having others help with fluidity, suggesting a more personal touch. The correction came only after public attention had already drawn the issue to light.
His explanation was vague, using language that seemed to downplay the involvement of AI while still acknowledging it. The irony lies in the fact that Roth was aiming for a vintage look, one that celebrates imperfection and human craftsmanship. Generative AI, however, is trained to mimic such imperfections, making the contradiction clear.
He wanted a handmade feel but ended up using a tool that creates artificial fingerprints. This situation reflects a broader trend in the industry, where filmmakers make bold claims about hand-drawn work before quietly admitting AI was involved. Each time, the truth comes out after the audience has already seen the film and paid for it.
