At this year’s D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, Imagineers shared big updates on upcoming projects at Disney World and introduced several new surprises. The Magic Kingdom will soon feature a new land named Villains Land, which draws inspiration from the dark magic of a corrupted wishing well. This land is set in a mysterious forest where Disney’s most famous villains have gathered to use the power of the well and build their own lairs.
One of the main attractions in Villains Land is a roller coaster that takes guests around Maleficent’s fortress on a mountain peak, according to clickorlando.com. The ride promises to include new elements that Imagineers say they have never attempted before. Another major attraction in Villains Land is a mirror-themed experience called the Mirror Realm.
In addition to Villains Land, Disney announced two new rides coming to Piston Peak National Park in Frontierland. These attractions are Cars Ridge Run Rally and Miss Fritter’s Daredevil Spin-Along, both inspired by the world of Disney and Pixar’s Cars. The area is designed to fully immerse guests in the world of Cars, with details like mountain peaks and geyser fields.
The Carousel of Progress at Magic Kingdom is getting a major update, including new scenes and characters. Actors Jamie Lee Curtis and Bryan Cranston will take on the roles of mom and dad in this classic attraction. The show will include a new scene set in the 1980s and feature an Audio-Animatronic version of Walt Disney himself.
EPCOT’s Spaceship Earth is also getting a redesign to bring it into the internet age. The attraction has not been updated since nearly 20 years ago, and this new version will modernize its experience. Disney’s Hollywood Studios is introducing a new land called Monstropolis, inspired by the world of Monsters Inc.
This land will feature a show titled “Welcome to Monstropolis” hosted by Mike and Sulley in the Glob Theater. Dining options include Harryhausen’s restaurant, where guests can enjoy sushi served by an Audio-Animatronic chef. Another new dining spot is Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza, adding to the land’s themed offerings.
A surprise announcement at D23 was that the Yeti Audio-Animatronic will return to Expedition Everest at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. This marks a comeback for the creature that has been part of the ride’s experience since its opening.
