Camron Jones has been cast to play Tupac Shakur in an upcoming biographical film about Snoop Dogg. The movie is titled Snoop and will be directed by Craig Brewer, who previously worked on Hustle & Flow. Jones is best known for his role in the Amazon Prime series Panic.
Jonathan Daviss will portray Snoop Dogg, not that Snoop Dogg himself will be portrayed by Jonathan Daviss, according to NewsBytes. The film is being produced by Snoop Dogg and Brian Grazer, who also produced Eminem’s 8 Mile, according to a report from NME.
Tupac Shakur died in Las Vegas in 1996 after being shot by an unknown assailant. The two rappers were close early in their careers, collaborating on the track ‘2 Of Amerikaz Most Wanted’. However, their friendship cooled due to the East Coast-West Coast rap rivalry that Tupac became deeply involved in.
Despite this, Snoop visited Tupac in the hospital during his final days. Lauren London will play Snoop Dogg’s mother, Beverly Tate, in the film. Beverly Tate was a major influence on her son and gave him the nickname Snoopy as a child.
Myles Bullock will portray Dr. Dre, who is a long-time collaborator of Snoop’s and produced his debut album Doggystyle, Yardbarker reported. The film is set to release on August 6, 2027. It is the first project under an overall deal between Death Row Pictures and NBCUniversal Entertainment & Studios.
The movie explores Snoop Dogg’s journey from Long Beach, California to becoming one of the most successful rappers in history. Snoop joined Death Row Records in the 1990s and worked with legends like Dr. Dre and Tupac Shakur. Snoop’s debut album Doggystyle was released in November 1993.
He has also worked in film and published a cookbook titled From Crook to Cook: Platinum Recipes from Tha Boss Dogg’s Kitchen. The biopic project has been in development for several years. Snoop announced his involvement as a producer back in 2022 and said he wanted the right director and writer to tell his story.
Universal Pictures chairwoman Donna Langley praised Snoop Dogg as a singular artist with a major cultural legacy. The film will feature music from Snoop Dogg’s extensive catalog and is being produced by Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer.
The screenplay was originally written by Joe Robert Cole and later revised by Craig Brewer. Camron Jones has appeared in shows like Shameless and The Purge, in addition to Panic. Lauren London has worked on projects such as Netflix’s You People and Prime Video’s Without Remorse.
She was previously married to Nipsey Hussle and honored him after his death in 2019. The film will be produced by Snoop Dogg, Brian Grazer, and Sara Ramaker, president of Death Row Pictures.
Universal Pictures is overseeing the production with Ryan Jones and Tony Ducret in key roles.
