Quincy Jones’s Past Conflict with Tupac Shakur and Subsequent Reconciliation

Quincy Jones
By Jessica Olson on November 4, 2024

In 1993, Tupac made disparaging remarks about Jones in The Source magazine. He accused Jones of neglecting Black women and insulted his children. Several years later, Rashida Jones, Quincy’s daughter, recalled the incident in an interview with The New Yorker. She highlighted Tupac’s initial ignorance and self-absorption.

Reports indicate that after Rashida responded with an open letter, Tupac sought to make amends. He mistakenly approached Kidada Jones, Rashida’s sister, in New York to apologize, which led to a romance between Tupac and Kidada. Their relationship helped resolve tensions between Tupac and Quincy, ultimately bringing them closer.

Quincy Jones’s initial displeasure with the situation was evident. He was wary when he learned of his daughter’s relationship with Tupac. However, Jones eventually accepted Tupac’s apology, leading to a newfound friendship. Despite the rocky start, Quincy and Tupac reconciled, and their families bonded.

Tupac, who dated Madonna, encountered similar scrutiny for his interracial relationships. His letter to Madonna, auctioned in 2017, revealed the pressures he felt regarding public perception. Tragedy struck in 1996 when Tupac was fatally shot, leaving a lasting impact on the music world.

Quincy Jones’s death marks the end of a remarkable era. His work with artists like Michael Jackson and Frank Sinatra solidified his legacy. His family, including his daughters Rashida and Kidada, remember him fondly. Quincy’s ability to forgive and forge friendships speaks to his character.
