A major shift in the live stage capture market has occurred as a new production takes the top spot at the box office. The musical Hadestown has now claimed the title of highest-grossing live stage capture, surpassing the long-running Hamilton.

This achievement marks a significant moment for the production that blends mythic storytelling with modern musical theater. The narrative follows two interconnected stories from Greek mythology, one involving Orpheus and Eurydice, the other centered on Hades and Persephone.

The production has drawn in more than six million viewers since its release.

Leaders from the company behind the film expressed pride in the outcome and the campaign that led to it.

The movie was filmed on London’s West End stage, capturing the original Broadway cast in full performance. The team behind the musical includes actors like Reeve Carney as Orpheus, Eva Noblezada as Eurydice, and André De Shields as Hermes. Other key roles were played by Amber Gray as Persephone and Patrick Page as Hades.

The show has also been popular on tour, with fans seeing it across the country.

A recent stop in Minnesota brought the musical to a new audience. The tour is scheduled to return to the Orpheum Theatre in February 2027 for another chance to see it.

The musical was created by Anaïs Mitchell and directed by Rachel Chavkin for the stage. It earned eight Tony Awards in 2019, including Best Musical. The production also won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album in 2020.

The film version of the musical has received strong reviews from audiences and critics alike. It holds a Certified Fresh rating with a 99% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The film was directed by Brett Sullivan, who brought the stage production to a new medium.

People interested in seeing Hadestown can find showtimes and purchase tickets through the company’s official website.
