Copper Wire Stolen from Light Poles in Sunnyvale

By Greg Cook on January 12, 2012

SUNNYVALE Calif. (DNR) – There have been several copper wire thefts from light poles recently in Sunnyvale.

City officials are calling it a “rash” of wire thefts since November 1 2011. Thieves have stolen more than 16,000 feet of wire, valued at more than $21,000.

Besides the monetary loss, the thefts have created a public safety issue for the city. Poor lighting could result in accidents or added danger to pedestrians.

The Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety (DPS) is investigating the crimes, which have occurred mostly in commercial areas of the city. Persian Drive has been hit, as well as Borregas, Weddel and Morse avenues.

Wire has been taken from the city greenbelt and Hetch Hetchy right-of-way. Lakewood Village was also targeted.

Residents are asked to call the police or emergency services at 911 if they witness “suspicious vehicles, subjects or activities.”
