Digital News Report – Holistic medicine gurus, Andrew Weil and Deepak Chopra shared a wealth of health tips and remedies on today’s ‘The Dr. Oz Show.’ Here are just a few of the supplements, spices, foods that the two experts recommended.
Anti-Cancer and Anti-Inflammatory Foods and Supplements
One suggestion came with replacing animal protein with plant-based proteins. Deepak Chopra explained that animal protein has many saturated fats. Processed meats have nitrosamines, which are believed to be carcinogenic for the colon. He suggested eating meat free alternatives. Doctor Oz added that his wife is a vegetarian.
Weil suggests cooking foods at low temperatures versus using high temperatures. He explained that the higher temperatures could produce cancer-causing chemicals, especially with meat. If you must grill, he suggested marinating the meat, which might protect some of the food from the chemical change.
Deepak suggested taking anti-cancer supplements of Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Selenium, Vitamin E, and Carotene.
Anti-Inflammatory foods to eat are berries, Black Cod, Bok Choy, and Ginger suggested Andrew Weil. He said that Black Cod is also called Butterfish and is a sustainable fish. Ginger is the most powerful anti-inflammatory agent said Weill.
Alzheimer’s Disease
The next segment was about three things that might help prevent Alzheimer’s disease. Andrew Weil said Alzheimer’s disease always starts out as inflammation. He suggested taking a vitamin E supplement (20 IU daily). Taking the herb Gingko 600 mg daily could slow the progression of the disease. The third supplement that might help with memory is Phosphhatidyl Serine, taken in doses of 200 mg twice daily.
Deepak Chopra suggested these foods could be helpful for the brain, Brazil Nuts, one hardboiled egg yolk, and coffee, which could add magnesium and chromium.
They suggested eating 1-part Turmeric, 2-parts Sage, and 3-parts Ginger. You can use it as a rub for the salmon for a healthy boost.
Stress Reduction
Andrew Weil shared different ways to reduce stress. There is a lot that can be done to deal with stress, he explained.
Some people suffer from Sunday stress because of the upcoming work week. Andrew Weill shared a squash soup recipe that would reduce stress. He also said that the Holy Basil supplement in extract form could be helpful. A person could take it twice a day, stay on it for some time, and see what happens. To ease the Monday morning wakeup, get rid of the jarring sound of the alarm clock. Instead, have a alarm clock to make a gentler wake up.
PMS stress is another condition that is difficult to deal with. Weil said stress makes PMS worse and vice versa. He suggests reducing caffeine intake during that time. He also suggested taking a black currant oil supplement of 500 mg twice daily at the start of the period.
A study found that sitting in traffic causes stress and could increase a person’s chance of dying of a heart attack. If stuck in traffic for three hours or more, Dr. Oz. Weil suggested breathing exercises that can reduce stress while driving. He would do this for four breathe cycles and repeat if needed.
Boost Energy
Deepak Chopra shared different ways to boost your energy level throughout the day by increasing your metabolism.
Morning routine – Drink a glass of warm water. This will get your bowel movement to kick-in. Before leaving for the day, take sesame oil and rub on the hands, earlobes and forehead. What the oil does is it calms and invigorates at the same time.
Noon routine – Eat your main meal at lunchtime instead of dinner. It will be converted into energy instead of fat. In the evening he suggested drinking a cup of ginseng tea.
Evening routine – Our metabolism starts to slow down at night. He shared an elixir that contained equal parts of lemon juice, ginger root juice, water, and honey. This drink will increase metabolism a little bit. To get a good night sleep, Chopra said to take a valerian supplement, which will help you to fall asleep.
Common Complaints and Home Remedies
Cough – Weil said to breathe steam with oil of oregano, which he said is a powerful anti-bacterial agent. Chopra suggested taking 1 tsp of honey with turmeric sprinkled on top of it and does this three of four times a day.
Indigestion – Weil suggested taking licorice extract called DGL (a supplement). This is a chewable tablet. Let the juice run down the throat. Chopra said he does not get indigestion, but suggested taking ginger root. He recommended squeezing some lemon juice on it, and then chew it before every meal.
Headaches – Weil said for a tension headache, massage the neck and shoulders. If it is a vascular headache, such as a migraine, he suggested taking Butterbur supplement (75 mg) twice daily. Chopra recommended using meditation for migraines and almost every headache.
