Digital News Report – On today’s ‘The Dr. Oz Show’ controversial-alternative medicine Doctor Joe Mercola came back on the TV show to discuss some of the supplements that he recommends.

In the first part on the interview, Doctor Oz asked him why he did not continue to practice traditional medicine. Mercola said that early on in his career, as a traditional doctor, he was prescribing medications but was not treating the source of the problem.

Doctor Oz asked Mercola why did he decided to sell supplements. Mercola said that he needed a way to pay for his website and newsletter and did not want to go with advertising.  He pointed out that all his supplements are natural and nobody has ever died from taking his supplements. He also said that a study found that prescription drugs could kill people. Next, Mercola shared supplements that offer different health benefits.

Coconut Oil

Mercola said that coconut oil might help prevent Alzheimer’s disease. The typical dose would be 1 – 3 teaspoons. When the coconut oil gets hot it becomes a liquid but it is a solid in cooler temperatures.

UbiQuinol Supplement

Mercola explained that COenzymeQ10 is the oxidized version and has to add an electron in order for the body to use the supplement. If a person is under the age of the 30, taking a COQ10 supplement works pretty well. However, he said that if you are over the age of 40 taking UbiQuinol supplements could be easier to use in the body. Mercola also said that if you take any Statin cholesterol lowering prescription drugs people should be taking either COQ10 or UbiQuinol supplements. Mercola said that many countries in Europe make it mandatory to prescribe COQ10 or Ubiquinol along with the Statin drugs.

L-Arginine Supplement

L-Arginine is the precursor to nitric oxide, which is a very potent dilator for blood vessels. If a person had insufficient blood flow, such as with erectile dysfunction or to their extremities, taking L-Arginine might help improve blood flow. Mercola adds that you have to have a comprehensive lifestyle in order to benefit from these supplements.

Mercola said that a person could eat foods that have high amounts of L-Arginine. These foods are often high in protein, such as in salmon, chicken, oatmeal, chickpeas, walnut, and milk. Mercola said that he is against drinking pasteurized milk. He said that the milk should be raw and come from graze feed cows.

Astaxanthin Supplement

The next supplement Mercola recommended is called Astaxanthin, which comes from marine algae. The color of healthy salmon comes from the Astaxanthin. Flamingos turn pink when they eat Astaxanthin. Mercola said that vitamin D is more important than this supplement, but Astaxanthin is still very beneficial because it offers the most potent anti-inflammatory properties. Mercola said specifically taking Astaxanthin on a regular basis might prevent cataracts in the eyes. He said that the supplement is considerably more potent, 50 – 60 times more potent, that vitamin E or vitamin C. He also mentioned that athletes taking Astaxanthin might be able to improve their performance. Astaxanthin needs to be taken with food.

Mercola points out that supplements are not a magic pill. He said that supplements should be used in addition to a healthy lifestyle.
