Digital News Report – Dr. Oz discussed supplements that might help aid in weight loss on his TV talk show today. The first supplement discussed was Safflower oil, which might help lose fat around the belly. Montel continued to explain that SafSlim is available everywhere. Two tablespoons of SafSlim supplement should be taken one half hour before you eat Montel said. This supplement actually started to change his cravings for sweets. He said that by the end of the meal he was not craving the sugar after the meal. He said that the SafSlim is not a silver bullet; you still have to eat right and exercise to lose weight.

Dr. Oz said an alternative is to take safflower oil, around 6.4 grams of linoleic acid is needed for the benefit. The oil contains omega-6 fatty acid. Dr. Oz said that you could also use the 2 teaspoons of safflower oil daily. He then said 7 – 10 grams of safflower oil is needed. Sunflower seeds have some of the linoleic acid in it, so he suggested eating 3 teaspoons of sunflower seeds and this would accomplish the goal of getting enough of this omega-6 fatty acid.

Montel Williams started taking SafSlim, a safflower oil based supplement, and used it for 11 weeks starting 9 months ago. He lost 2-inches off his waist after adding the supplement to his routine. He was already working out every day and he eats healthy. He had to travel and at some point, he stopped taking the Safslim supplement and he added one inch back on his waist. Once he started taking the supplement again, his waistline slimmed back down again. Montel tested the product and then he said he contacted the company to become a spokesperson for it, because he wants to let people know that this product worked for him, even though Montel is 55 years old and has multiple sclerosis.

Dr. Oz showed an animation demonstrating how the linoliec fatty acids might help to remove the fat out of the body.

Researchers from Ohio State University studied safflower oil for weight loss, but they also gained a $10,000 grant from the company after the research was completed. Martha Belury, PhD, RD is a Carol S. Kennedy Professor from Ohio State University that conducted the research. She was on the TV show and said that the study results had women that did not lose weight, but lost belly fat in their body. The trunk fat was reduced and the women accumulated more muscle mass. The study participants were women who were obese and had type 2 diabetes. Belury said that possibly the omega 6 fatty acid helps boost the fat cells to release the stored fat.

Dr. Oz asked other medical doctors if they thought that the safflower oil would help with weight loss around the belly. Dr. David Katz from Yale University did not believe that it would work. Dr. Caroline Apovian from Boston Medical said yes. Dr. Roisen from Clevland clinic said he would not bother.

Dr. Russel Greenfield, a clinical Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill said maybe it could work. He said it was complex issue. He continued to explain that omega-6 fatty acids are believed to be pro-inflammatory, while omega -3 fatty acids are anti-inflammatory. The omega-6 fatty acids are readily available in the diet. If omega-6 fatty acid is so readily available, why is everyone still so fat he questioned.
