7.2 Magnitude Earthquake shakes near Christchurch New Zealand

Digital News Report – A major 7.2 magnitude earthquake occurred in the early morning hours of Saturday near Christchurch, New Zealand according to the USGS. The earthquake happened at 4:35 AM at the epicenter location which was 20 miles northwest of the largely populated city.

Christchurch is the largest city located in the South Island region of New Zealand. The city’s population is estimated to be around 372,600 residents.

Damage reports have not yet been reported, but there have been people in reported having felt the earthquake all of the the island.
