Digital News Report- In celebration of St Patrick’s Day, the fountain in front of the White House ran green as President Obama and Irish Prime Minister Cowen apparently decided to deliver their speeches completely drunk. At least, that’s what we assume happened. It could have just been a horrible teleprompter mix up, but I think it’s a lot more fun imagining two world leaders kicking back some green beer before delivering their speeches.
The debacle began as PM Cowen started repeated the speech given by the President only moment prior. After a few moments he realized his mistake and corrected himself by saying, “that’s your speech” to the President.
However, the drunken ramblings didn’t stop there. When Obama began to speak after Cowen’s mix up he stated that he’d like to “thank President Obama for inviting everyone over.” Yes, he thanked himself.
The day wasn’t only filled with drunken teleprompter mishaps though as Obama addressed the very serious issue of the violence that has occurred in Northern Ireland in recent months. “Not all Americans are Irish but all Americans support those who stand on the side of peace and peace will prevail,” he said.
The day was also filled with celebration as guests were treated to green sparkling wine. Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Paul Muldoon from Northern Ireland and Maggie McCarthy, a traditional Irish dancer and musician from Cork were also in attendance along with the vocal group Celtic Thunder.
