Napoli suffer their third Champions League defeat in four matches as Porto claim their first victory, with Rafa Marín sent off late in a difficult night for the Italian side.
FC Porto delivered an emphatic second-half performance to defeat Napoli 4-1 in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, at Estádio do Dragão in Portugal. Three goals after halftime secured Porto’s first victory in the league phase and handed Napoli their third defeat in four European matches.
Jan Bednarek opened the scoring for Porto before Scott McTominay equalized shortly before halftime. Gabri Veiga and Jakub Kiwior then struck in the second half, with Samu Aghehowa converting a late penalty after Napoli defender Rafa Marín was sent off.
The result represented a dramatic turnaround for Porto, who entered the fourth round of Champions League fixtures without a point. Napoli, meanwhile, failed to build on their previous European victory and suffered another setback away from home.
Porto Strike Early Before Napoli Respond
Porto made an aggressive start in front of their home supporters and found an early breakthrough through Polish defender Jan Bednarek. The center-back scored in the 11th minute with a header following a corner, giving the Portuguese side an advantage.
The opening goal put Napoli under pressure to respond. Porto’s organized defensive play made it difficult for the visitors to establish a consistent attacking rhythm, although the Italian side gradually worked their way back into the contest.
Napoli finally found an equalizer in the 43rd minute through Scotland international Scott McTominay. His finish brought the visitors level at 1-1 and gave them an opportunity to regroup before the second half.
McTominay’s goal briefly changed the direction of the match. Napoli had recovered from an early setback, but their defensive problems returned after the interval as Porto increased their attacking pressure.
Both teams entered the dressing rooms with the score tied. The second half would prove decisive, with Porto converting their opportunities while Napoli struggled to contain the home side.
Porto Dominate the Second Half
The match remained level until the 71st minute, when Spanish midfielder Gabri Veiga restored Porto’s advantage. His goal broke the deadlock and shifted the momentum firmly toward the hosts.
Napoli attempted to respond, but Porto continued pressing forward. Just nine minutes later, Polish defender Jakub Kiwior scored to extend the lead to 3-1, leaving the Italian club facing a difficult task.
The two goals in nine minutes transformed a closely contested match into a commanding performance by the Portuguese side. Porto had entered the evening under pressure after three consecutive European defeats, making the sudden scoring surge particularly important.
Porto maintained their attacking intent as Napoli searched for a way back into the contest. The visitors increasingly struggled to create meaningful opportunities, while the home side protected its advantage and threatened to add another goal.
Napoli’s difficulties became even more apparent in the closing minutes. Their inability to recover after falling behind reflected the defensive inconsistency that has affected their European campaign.
Rafa Marín Sent Off as Samu Converts Penalty
Napoli’s hopes of a late comeback effectively ended when defender Rafa Marín was sent off near the end of regulation time. The defender received a red card after bringing down Porto forward Samu Aghehowa inside the penalty area.
English referee Michael Oliver awarded Porto a penalty, providing the hosts with an opportunity to extend their advantage. Samu stepped forward and converted the spot kick in the 90th minute, completing the 4-1 victory.
The dismissal left Napoli with 10 players and added to an already difficult evening. It also demonstrated how quickly the visitors’ situation deteriorated after Porto regained the lead.
Oliver officiated the match with English assistants Stuart Burt and James Mainwaring. Stuart Attwell served as the video assistant referee, with Christian Dingert working as assistant VAR.
The contest also featured disciplinary problems for Napoli beyond Marín’s dismissal. Several visiting players received yellow cards as the Italian side struggled to regain control during the increasingly frustrating second half.
Frustration Grows Among Napoli Players
Tensions reportedly surfaced within Napoli’s squad during the closing stages. Kevin De Bruyne and Lorenzo Lucca were involved in a heated exchange near Porto’s penalty area around the 82nd minute.
The incident occurred during a Napoli attack, with television cameras capturing the players exchanging words. Although disagreements between teammates can occur during matches, the confrontation attracted attention because of Napoli’s difficult performance.
Matteo Politano also expressed frustration after the defeat. The Napoli winger called for greater accountability and reflection within the squad as the team attempts to improve its results.
The players’ reactions reflected the disappointment surrounding another Champions League setback. Napoli had entered the competition with hopes of advancing beyond the league phase, but their opening four fixtures have produced more defeats than victories.
The defeat also raised questions about Napoli’s ability to maintain concentration and defensive organization throughout matches. Their first-half recovery suggested they could challenge Porto, but the second-half collapse left them without a point.
Napoli’s Champions League Struggles Continue
Napoli entered Wednesday’s match with one victory and two defeats from their first three league-phase fixtures. Their campaign began with a 1-0 home loss to Arsenal on September 9, followed by a 3-1 defeat at Villarreal on October 13.
The Italian club then defeated Bodø/Glimt 4-3 on October 20, securing its first Champions League victory of the season. That result offered encouragement, but the defeat in Portugal demonstrated that significant problems remained.
UEFA’s pre-match records showed Napoli had gone seven consecutive away Champions League fixtures without a victory before visiting Porto. The sequence included six defeats and one draw, underscoring the difficulties the club has experienced on European trips.
Wednesday’s result extended that unsuccessful away run to eight matches. It also left Napoli with three points from four games, increasing the importance of their remaining fixtures.
Porto entered the match in an even more difficult position. The Portuguese side had lost 2-0 to Manchester City, 3-2 to Real Betis and 1-0 to PSV Eindhoven in its first three league-phase outings.
Its victory over Napoli therefore provided a much-needed lift. The four goals also represented Porto’s most productive attacking performance of the competition to that point.
Important Fixtures Await Both Clubs
Napoli face another demanding Champions League assignment when they travel to Manchester City on November 24. The match will offer the Italian side an opportunity to improve its position, although another defeat would further complicate its hopes of progressing.
Porto will return to European action against Feyenoord in Rotterdam on the same date. After finally securing their first points, the Portuguese club will seek to build on the result and move closer to the qualification places.
The league phase continues through January 27, 2027, with each club scheduled to play eight matches. Teams finishing in the top eight advance directly to the round of 16, while those placed ninth through 24th enter the knockout phase play-offs.
For Porto, Wednesday’s victory provided renewed momentum after a disappointing opening to the competition. Napoli must now address the defensive mistakes and disciplinary problems exposed in Portugal before facing another difficult European opponent.
