Noni Madueke’s Late Goal Gives Arsenal 1-0 Victory Over Nottingham Forest

The substitute scores with Arsenal’s only shot on target at the City Ground, keeping the defending Premier League champions three points behind Manchester City.

Arsenal secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest on Sunday, October 18, 2026, after substitute Noni Madueke scored a deflected goal in the 80th minute at the City Ground. The result gave the defending Premier League champions their sixth victory in seven league matches and kept them within three points of leaders Manchester City.

Madueke replaced Eberechi Eze at halftime and eventually delivered the breakthrough after Arsenal struggled to create clear opportunities. His shot was the visitors’ only attempt on target during a match largely controlled by possession rather than attacking chances.

The victory moved Arsenal to 18 points and maintained their position in second place. Nottingham Forest dropped into the relegation zone with five points after another frustrating afternoon in front of their home supporters.

Despite controlling much of the ball, Arsenal found it difficult to overcome Forest’s disciplined defensive structure. Manager Mikel Arteta made several substitutions before Madueke finally broke the deadlock with 10 minutes remaining.

Arsenal Struggles to Find an Early Breakthrough

The opening half produced few clear scoring opportunities, with both sides finding it difficult to create space in dangerous areas. Arsenal enjoyed greater possession but struggled to turn that advantage into meaningful chances.

Forest manager Oliver Glasner organized his team to defend compactly and prevent Arsenal from moving the ball freely through central areas. The approach limited opportunities for Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard and Arsenal’s other attacking players.

Arsenal’s first promising chance came from a set piece when Gabriel Magalhães threatened near the Forest goal. Defender Ousmane Diomande helped clear the danger before the visitors could capitalize.

Kai Havertz also had an opportunity after meeting a free kick delivered by Declan Rice. His header went wide, leaving Arsenal without a shot on target before halftime.

Forest created occasional opportunities through quick attacking movements. Dan Ndoye found space after a defensive mistake by Riccardo Calafiori but could only direct his effort into the side netting.

Neither goalkeeper was required to make a save during the opening 45 minutes, reflecting the limited attacking quality displayed by both teams.

For Arsenal, the performance continued a pattern of finding it difficult to break down opponents who defend in large numbers. Forest, meanwhile, showed defensive organization but lacked the attacking precision needed to capitalize on their opportunities.

Arteta Replaces Eze With Madueke at Halftime

Arteta responded to the disappointing first half by replacing Eze with Madueke at the interval. The substitution brought additional pace and direct running to Arsenal’s left side.

Eze had made his first Premier League start of the season but struggled to influence the match. Forest’s defensive positioning limited the space available for him to receive the ball and create opportunities.

Madueke offered a different attacking approach, using his speed to challenge defenders and move toward the penalty area.

His introduction gave Arsenal another option against opponents determined to defend their narrow spaces. However, the visitors continued to experience difficulties finding a clear opening.

Forest began the second half with greater attacking intent. Liam Delap became increasingly involved, using his strength and movement to create problems for Arsenal’s defenders.

Delap nearly created a chance for Neco Williams shortly after the restart. He later had an effort deflected wide as Forest attempted to take advantage of their improved attacking momentum.

Arsenal also had opportunities that went unfinished. Gabriel headed over from a corner, while Rice missed the target from inside the penalty area.

With neither team able to break through, Arteta turned to his bench again.

Madueke Scores Decisive Goal in 80th Minute

Arsenal introduced Jurriën Timber, Mikel Merino and Viktor Gyökeres in the 66th minute, attempting to add fresh energy and attacking options.

The changes gradually increased Arsenal’s pressure, although Forest continued to defend effectively.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 80th minute when Rice moved the ball toward Madueke on the left side.

Madueke advanced inside, taking on Daniel Muñoz before striking toward the far corner. His shot deflected off Forest defender Jair Cunha, changing direction and leaving goalkeeper Matz Sels unable to react.

The ball flew into the net, giving Arsenal a 1-0 lead after 80 minutes of frustration.

It was a fortunate deflection, but Madueke had created the opportunity through his willingness to attack the defender and take a shot.

The goal was particularly significant because Arsenal had failed to register another attempt on target throughout the entire match.

According to Opta Analyst, Madueke has scored 13 of his 17 Premier League goals away from home. All four of his league goals for Arsenal have come on the road.

His contribution also continued an important trend for Arteta’s team. Each of Arsenal’s previous three Premier League victories has featured a winning goal scored by a substitute.

Bruno Guimarães had provided the decisive goals against Sunderland and Leeds United before Madueke delivered against Forest.

Nottingham Forest Almost Claims Late Equalizer

Forest responded to falling behind by committing more players forward and creating several opportunities during the closing minutes.

Callum Hudson-Odoi helped set up Chris Wood in the 89th minute, but Rice produced an important block to prevent the striker from testing Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya.

Defender Murillo then delivered one of the game’s most impressive attacking moments. Making his 100th appearance for Forest, he carried the ball forward through Arsenal’s defensive lines before curling a shot narrowly wide.

His effort came during stoppage time and briefly threatened to rescue a point for the home side.

Delap had another opportunity moments later, but Arsenal defender Ezri Konsa recovered to make a crucial challenge and prevent a clear scoring chance.

Those defensive interventions preserved Arsenal’s narrow advantage and prevented Forest from turning its late pressure into an equalizer.

Forest finished with 14 shots, including two on target, while Arsenal registered only one shot on target despite dominating possession.

The result was particularly disappointing for Glasner because his team had worked hard defensively and created enough chances to challenge the defending champions.

Arteta Praises Arsenal’s Strength in Depth

Arteta emphasized the importance of patience after the victory, acknowledging that Forest had made it difficult for his players to find space.

Speaking after the match, the Arsenal manager said his substitutes had made the difference during an afternoon when the starting lineup struggled to produce attacking opportunities.

“We stayed focused and the finishers made a huge impact,” Arteta said.

He praised Madueke’s contribution alongside the performances of Timber, Merino and Gyökeres after they entered the match.

Arteta also acknowledged that Arsenal should have made better use of several earlier scoring chances. He argued that greater composure in front of goal would have prevented the match from remaining so close.

The victory demonstrated the value of Arsenal’s squad depth during a demanding schedule involving domestic and European competition.

Madueke’s performance strengthens his case for additional playing time, particularly with several attacking positions facing significant competition.

For Eze, the halftime substitution represented a difficult afternoon, although Arteta has previously expressed confidence in the midfielder’s ability.

Arsenal’s depth provides the manager with alternatives when a particular attacking approach does not work, something that proved important against Forest.

Forest’s Home Scoring Drought Continues

Glasner was disappointed with the result but praised his players’ commitment and defensive organization.

The Forest manager argued that his team had performed well enough to earn something from the contest, particularly after restricting Arsenal to one shot on target.

“The result feels unfair,” Glasner said, referring to the balance of opportunities and his team’s defensive work.

He acknowledged, however, that Forest needed to convert chances when facing opponents of Arsenal’s quality.

The defeat extended Forest’s run without a home Premier League goal to four matches this season. The club has become just the fifth team in English top-flight history to fail to score in its opening four home league fixtures.

Forest’s attacking problems have been made more difficult by the absence of Morgan Gibbs-White, who missed Sunday’s game because of an injury.

Glasner confirmed that he had decided not to risk the midfielder after he experienced discomfort following the previous match against Crystal Palace.

Without Gibbs-White, Forest lacked some of the creativity normally provided by one of their most important attacking players.

The team has now lost three consecutive league matches and remains in the relegation zone, increasing the urgency of improving its scoring record.

Arsenal Keeps Pressure on Manchester City

Sunday’s victory maintained Arsenal’s strong start to the campaign, with six wins from seven Premier League matches.

The champions have won three consecutive league games after losing 3-0 to Brighton in September. Their ability to secure narrow victories has helped them remain close to Manchester City despite occasional difficulties in attack.

Arsenal now turns its attention to European competition, with a Champions League match against Bayern Munich scheduled for Wednesday.

The demanding fixture schedule will continue to test Arteta’s ability to rotate players and maintain performance levels.

Nottingham Forest faces an important match against Ipswich Town as Glasner searches for improvements in front of goal.

For Arsenal, the three points came without an especially convincing attacking display. Madueke’s late intervention ensured that the team’s difficulties creating chances did not prevent another important victory in the Premier League title race.
