The Senegalese striker ends Manchester City’s perfect Premier League start with two goals at Villa Park, while Arsenal moves level on points with the leaders after beating Everton.

Aston Villa ended Manchester City’s perfect start to the Premier League season with a 2-1 victory at Villa Park on Saturday, October 24, 2026. Nicolas Jackson scored twice for Unai Emery’s side, capitalizing on defensive mistakes to hand City their first league defeat under manager Enzo Maresca.

Erling Haaland briefly equalized for Manchester City early in the second half, but Jackson restored Villa’s lead in the 60th minute. Goalkeeper Zion Suzuki made several important saves as the hosts secured their first home league victory of the campaign.

The result prevented City from becoming only the third team to win its opening eight Premier League matches. Arsenal later defeated Everton 2-0, moving level with City on 21 points, although Manchester City remained first on goal difference.

Jackson Punishes Early Manchester City Mistake

Villa entered the match having won three consecutive games across all competitions. However, Emery’s team had struggled at home in the Premier League and faced opponents who had won their first seven league fixtures.

The home side began aggressively, pressing Manchester City’s defenders and challenging their attempts to build attacks from the back. That approach produced an immediate reward.

In the sixth minute, City defender Marc Guéhi failed to control the ball under pressure. John McGinn took advantage and helped create an opening for Jackson, who finished to give Villa a 1-0 lead.

The early goal changed the match’s rhythm, forcing City to chase an equalizer while Villa continued disrupting their passing combinations.

Jackson’s pace and movement repeatedly troubled Guéhi. The defender was later booked for pulling down the Villa striker near the penalty area.

Maresca replaced Guéhi at halftime as City attempted to reorganize their defense and recover from the early setback.

Manchester City Fight Back Through Haaland

Despite conceding early, Manchester City created several opportunities during the first half. Rayan Cherki tested Suzuki, while Iliman Ndiaye struck the post as the visitors increased their attacking pressure.

City controlled much of the possession but struggled to turn their advantage into goals. Villa’s defenders remained organized and limited the space available for Haaland inside the penalty area.

The equalizer finally arrived in the 52nd minute when Ndiaye delivered a cross that Haaland headed into the net from close range.

The goal was Haaland’s 13th of the Premier League season and appeared to give City the momentum needed to complete a comeback.

Moments later, Suzuki produced another outstanding save, pushing Joško Gvardiol’s shot onto the crossbar. The stop prevented City from taking the lead during one of their strongest attacking periods.

The goalkeeper’s performance became increasingly important as Manchester City’s pressure continued.

Jackson Scores Winner After Donnarumma Error

Villa responded to City’s equalizer with another rapid attacking move.

Jackson helped initiate the counterattack by sending the ball toward substitute Ibrahim Mbaye, who had entered the match shortly before the hour mark.

Mbaye advanced into space and delivered a low cross toward Jackson inside the penalty area. The striker connected with a first-time shot that slipped underneath goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The mistake restored Villa’s lead at 2-1 in the 60th minute and left City needing another equalizer.

Jackson’s second goal demonstrated the form he has developed under Emery. The former Chelsea striker has scored six goals in his last six appearances, becoming an important part of Villa’s attack.

His contribution extended beyond finishing. Jackson repeatedly pressured defenders, created passing options and helped Villa move forward quickly when possession changed.

The striker received a standing ovation when he was substituted during the closing stages.

Suzuki and Villa Defense Protect Narrow Lead

Manchester City continued pressing for an equalizer after falling behind for the second time.

Maresca introduced attacking substitutes, including Phil Foden, as the visitors looked for greater creativity in the final third.

Villa remained disciplined despite spending long periods without the ball. Their defenders blocked passing lanes and prevented City from creating clear shooting opportunities in crowded areas.

Suzuki was particularly impressive, finishing with several important saves against one of the Premier League’s most productive attacks.

City recorded seven shots on target compared with Villa’s two, according to match statistics published by Sky Sports. The visitors also held approximately 62% of possession.

Those advantages were not enough to overcome Villa’s finishing and defensive work.

Haaland nearly scored again in the closing minutes, but Ian Maatsen cleared his goal-bound header off the line. The intervention preserved Villa’s lead and helped secure the victory.

City finished the match with several missed opportunities, while Villa demonstrated how effective defending and decisive finishing can overcome a possession disadvantage.

Maresca Reflects on City’s First League Defeat

Manchester City’s loss ended an impressive seven-match winning streak to open the league season.

Maresca, who took charge before the campaign, had been attempting to guide City to a club-record eighth consecutive victory at the start of a Premier League season.

Speaking after the match, he acknowledged that defensive errors had played a major role in the defeat.

Reuters reported that Maresca was generally satisfied with his team’s attacking performance and the number of chances created. However, he recognized that mistakes at both ends of the field had prevented City from collecting points.

Emery praised Villa’s performance as evidence of progress following a difficult start to the season.

The victory was particularly significant because Villa had struggled to convert promising performances into positive results earlier in the campaign.

With Jackson providing goals and Suzuki strengthening the defense, Emery’s rebuilt squad appears to be developing greater consistency.

The result also marked Villa’s fourth consecutive home league victory against Manchester City, continuing a strong recent record at Villa Park.

Arsenal Capitalize on City’s Defeat

Manchester City’s setback gave Arsenal an opportunity to close the gap at the top of the Premier League.

The defending champions defeated Everton 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium, with defenders Ezri Konsa and Gabriel Magalhães scoring the goals.

Konsa opened the scoring in the seventh minute after a corner from Martin Ødegaard caused problems for Everton’s defense. The defender reacted quickly to score from close range.

Gabriel doubled Arsenal’s advantage in the 68th minute, heading home a cross from Ben White.

Arsenal joined Manchester City on 21 points after eight matches, with both clubs recording seven wins and one defeat.

However, City remained ahead in the table because of their superior goal difference, plus 11 compared with Arsenal’s plus eight.

Aston Villa climbed to sixth place with 11 points, giving Emery’s side additional momentum heading into its next fixtures.

Tottenham and Fulham Also Record Victories

Elsewhere in the Premier League, Tottenham Hotspur defeated Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders scored an own goal in the 77th minute before Cole Palmer received a second yellow card and was sent off three minutes later.

Mathys Tel scored Tottenham’s second goal in the 87th minute, securing an important away victory for Roberto De Zerbi’s side.

Fulham also collected three points with a 1-0 win over Coventry City. Oscar Bobb scored the decisive goal in the 80th minute, helping Fulham move away from the relegation places.

The results completed a significant Saturday in the Premier League, with Manchester City’s unbeaten record ending and several clubs improving their positions.

Villa Prepare for Bournemouth and Fulham

Aston Villa will next turn their attention to an EFL Cup fixture against Bournemouth before returning to Premier League action against Fulham.

Manchester City face Brighton twice in succession, beginning with a League Cup fourth-round match on Wednesday, followed by another meeting in the Premier League.

For City, the challenge is to respond to their first league defeat and address the defensive errors that allowed Jackson to score twice.

Villa, meanwhile, will look to build on their improved form after recording a victory against one of the title favorites.

Saturday’s result leaves Manchester City and Arsenal tied on points at the top of the table, while Aston Villa’s climb to sixth provides evidence of the progress Emery’s team has made during October.
