The Argentine defender expressed regret for publicly criticizing Manchester United’s leadership after a Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid. Talks with manager Michael Carrick and club executives have helped settle the dispute.

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has apologized for publicly criticizing the club’s leadership following a 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid. The Argentina international reportedly received a fine after questioning the club’s summer transfer decisions and its support for manager Michael Carrick.

Martinez issued his apology on Thursday, October 15, 2026, after meeting with Carrick and senior United officials. The discussions included director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada, both central figures in the club’s management.

The 28-year-old defender described the meeting as positive and acknowledged that his frustration following Tuesday’s defeat had influenced his comments. United considers the matter resolved, although the club has declined to disclose details of any disciplinary action.

British media outlets, including BBC Sport, reported that Martinez had been fined. The amount of the reported penalty has not been made public.

Martinez Apologizes After Meeting With Club Officials

Martinez addressed the controversy in an Instagram statement after Thursday’s discussions at Manchester United’s Carrington training complex. His message marked a change from an earlier statement in which he explained his frustration without directly apologizing.

The defender acknowledged that his disappointment had affected his judgment after the defeat in Spain. He said his passion for football sometimes led him to express emotions more forcefully than intended.

“The frustration of the defeat led me to express how I felt at a time and place that perhaps were not the right ones, and for that I want to apologise,” Martinez wrote.

He also emphasized that everyone at Manchester United shares responsibility for improving the team’s performances. His statement stressed the importance of maintaining unity during a difficult period.

Martinez recognized that publicly criticizing the club’s leadership had not helped the collective effort. He reaffirmed his confidence in the people working at Old Trafford and their commitment to restoring success.

The defender ended his message by saying the dispute was behind him and that his attention had returned to winning matches.

Reuters reported that the decision to apologize publicly came from Martinez himself. A club source said United would keep any internal disciplinary measures private and regarded the matter as closed.

Champions League Defeat Triggered Criticism

The controversy began after Manchester United lost 2-0 to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday, October 13.

Atletico took an early lead through Pablo Barrios, who scored inside the opening minute. United struggled to recover before Leny Yoro received a red card in the second half.

Ademola Lookman subsequently scored Atletico’s second goal, securing victory for the Spanish club and extending United’s difficult run of results.

Following the match, Martinez criticized Manchester United’s recruitment strategy during a televised interview. He argued that the squad lacked sufficient depth to compete against leading European opponents.

His comments focused particularly on Jason Wilcox, whom he believed should have done more to strengthen the team during the summer transfer window.

Martinez said he expected greater investment and questioned whether United had assembled a squad capable of competing at the highest level.

He also defended Carrick, arguing that the manager had not received sufficient backing from the club’s recruitment department.

Rather than placing responsibility entirely on the coaching staff, Martinez suggested that United needed to examine decisions made elsewhere in the organization.

The defender acknowledged that players must improve their performances. However, he maintained that building a competitive squad also required effective recruitment and long-term planning.

Transfer Decisions Come Under Scrutiny

Manchester United spent approximately £155 million during the summer transfer window, according to reporting by The Guardian. Much of that investment went toward strengthening the midfield.

The club recruited Carlos Baleba, Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, but concerns remained about defensive depth and attacking options.

Martinez’s criticism reflected frustration over the club’s failure to strengthen several positions despite significant spending.

United’s defensive problems have become particularly noticeable because of injuries to established players. Carrick has been forced to adjust his selections and rely on younger squad members.

Ayden Heaven, normally a central defender, started at left-back against Atletico Madrid. His selection came amid difficulties finding suitable cover in that position.

Luke Shaw’s injury added to United’s problems, while other absences further restricted Carrick’s options.

Reports indicated that the club had explored potential defensive reinforcements, including Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall. However, those discussions did not result in a transfer.

The criticism has also exposed differing views about how Manchester United should allocate its resources. Some observers believe the midfield needed significant investment, while others argue that the club failed to address more urgent weaknesses elsewhere.

Wilcox continues to have the backing of United’s senior leadership despite Martinez’s remarks, according to reporting by The Times.

Former Players Criticize Martinez’s Outburst

Martinez’s comments attracted criticism from former Premier League players, including Wayne Rooney and Jamie Carragher.

Rooney described the defender’s public criticism as disrespectful, raising concerns about how the remarks might affect teammates and the manager.

Carragher also questioned the decision to criticize club officials immediately after a defeat. He argued that the comments risked increasing pressure on an already struggling squad.

The disagreement highlighted the distinction between legitimate concerns about recruitment and the responsibility players have to maintain unity.

However, reports suggest that some senior United players share Martinez’s frustration with the club’s summer transfer business.

The Guardian reported that concerns about squad depth and recruitment were widespread within the dressing room.

Those concerns do not necessarily mean every player supported Martinez’s decision to express them publicly. His subsequent apology addressed the manner and timing of his remarks rather than providing a detailed reassessment of the club’s transfer strategy.

Manchester United Endures Difficult Start

The controversy comes during a disappointing opening period of the 2026-27 season.

Manchester United have collected just six points from their first six Premier League matches, leaving them 13th in the standings.

It is the club’s poorest start to a league campaign in 40 years, adding pressure on Carrick as he attempts to stabilize performances.

United have also been eliminated from the Carabao Cup by Brighton, removing one opportunity to compete for domestic silverware.

The Champions League defeat against Atletico extended the team’s winless run to five matches across competitions.

Carrick has faced questions about his team selections, tactical approach and ability to produce consistent results. Injuries and limited squad depth have complicated his efforts.

Despite those problems, Martinez publicly supported Carrick before issuing his apology. His criticism was directed primarily toward recruitment decisions rather than the manager’s work.

The defender’s comments also drew attention to Manchester United’s wider management structure, particularly the responsibilities of Wilcox and the executive team.

Martinez Faces Uncertain Manchester United Future

Questions remain about Martinez’s long-term future at Old Trafford.

The Argentina international joined United from Ajax in 2022 and has become an important member of the defensive squad.

His current contract is due to expire in the summer of 2027, although United hold an option to extend the agreement by another year.

Reports have suggested that Martinez could seek a move when his contract expires. However, neither the defender nor the club has announced a final decision about his future.

United must also determine how to manage several defensive contracts as part of its longer-term squad planning.

For now, Martinez remains available for consideration as Carrick prepares for the next Premier League fixture.

Manchester United travel to face Leeds United on Sunday, October 18, in a match that carries additional importance following the team’s poor start.

It is not yet clear whether Martinez will start, remain among the substitutes or be left out of the matchday squad.

Carrick is expected to address reporters before the fixture, providing an opportunity to discuss United’s performances and the situation involving Martinez.

The club has moved to settle the internal dispute, but the concerns surrounding recruitment and results have not disappeared. Martinez’s next opportunity to help improve the situation could come against Leeds, where United will attempt to end their winless run.
