A 16-year-old gunman killed three children and a teacher at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend on Thursday. A bystander fatally shot the suspect, while two other victims were hospitalized in critical condition.

Five people are dead, including three children, a teacher and a teenage gunman, following a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday, October 15, 2026. Two additional victims were critically injured in an attack that prompted a rapid police response and an emergency evacuation.

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz confirmed that the children killed were ages 5, 8 and 11. The suspect, a 16-year-old Bend resident, was fatally shot by a community member who followed him into the school after seeing him enter with a firearm.

A 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were transported to St. Charles Medical Center with critical injuries. Their conditions had not been updated publicly by late Thursday evening.

Authorities have not identified the suspect or the victims. Investigators are working to determine what motivated the attack and whether the teenager had any connection to the elementary school.

Shooting Began Shortly Before 1 p.m.

The emergency began at approximately 12:59 p.m. when a person inside a vehicle called 911 to report being shot at near Silver Rail Elementary School.

According to Bend police, the caller described a suspect carrying a long gun who had fired multiple shots toward the vehicle.

Within the next minute, emergency dispatchers received numerous additional calls reporting that a gunman had entered the school.

Police said the suspect gained access to the building by firing through locked doors.

The school entered lockdown at approximately 1:01 p.m., and responding officers arrived one minute later.

As officers approached, they received information that the suspect had been shot inside the building.

Police Chief Krantz said a community member had witnessed the teenager entering the school, followed him inside and confronted him.

The bystander then fatally shot the suspect, according to the police chief’s account of the initial investigation.

Authorities have not publicly identified the person who intervened or explained the circumstances surrounding that individual’s presence at the school.

Officers entered the building, confirmed the suspect was dead and began searching classrooms and other areas for victims and possible additional threats.

Police subsequently confirmed that four people had been killed by the gunman.

Three Children and Teacher Among Victims

The victims included three elementary school students and one adult teacher.

Authorities confirmed the children’s ages as 5, 8 and 11 during a Thursday evening news conference.

Officials have not released their names, citing the ongoing investigation and the need to notify and support relatives.

Two other people suffered critical injuries during the attack.

A 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were transported to St. Charles Medical Center, the regional hospital serving Bend and surrounding communities.

Police did not immediately disclose the specific nature of their injuries.

The five confirmed deaths include the gunman. Earlier reports based on anonymous law enforcement sources had not established whether the suspect was included in the reported total.

The updated count means four victims were killed during the attack, in addition to the suspect.

Silver Rail Elementary serves students in kindergarten through fifth grade. According to state education records, the school enrolled 459 students during the previous academic year.

The campus is located in southeastern Bend, a central Oregon city approximately 150 miles southeast of Portland.

Community Member Stopped Suspected Shooter

One of the most significant developments in the investigation involves the person who confronted the attacker.

Police said the community member saw the 16-year-old enter the school and pursued him into the building.

The witness then confronted and fatally shot the teenager before officers reached the suspect.

Officials have not released information about the person’s identity, whether the individual had a relationship with the school or what weapon was used during the confrontation.

Police are examining the circumstances as part of the broader investigation.

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek praised the intervention during an evening news conference, saying the person’s actions prevented further loss of life.

She also acknowledged the emotional burden involved in experiencing such violence.

Authorities have not estimated how many additional people might have been endangered without the intervention.

Investigators continue to examine evidence from inside the school and the surrounding area to reconstruct the sequence of events.

The fact that the suspect was stopped does not change the severity of the attack, which left four victims dead and two others fighting for their lives.

Families Reunited at Nearby Church

As emergency personnel secured the campus, school officials directed families to Journey Church in Bend.

The church, located along South Highway 97, served as the designated reunification location for parents and guardians.

Students and staff were evacuated from the school after officers completed safety checks.

Police conducted a room-by-room search before allowing people to leave the building.

Families gathered for information while officials worked to account for students and employees.

The district asked residents and members of the public to avoid the school grounds so emergency vehicles and investigators could operate without interference.

Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook expressed sorrow over the attack during Thursday’s news conference.

He described the violence as a devastating event for the school district and the wider community.

Cook said no community should have to experience the circumstances confronting Bend.

District officials announced that all schools and athletic events would be canceled Friday, October 16.

The cancellation will give school communities time to respond to the tragedy and allow officials to coordinate support services.

State and Federal Investigators Respond

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the shooting, including Bend police, Oregon State Police and federal investigators.

The FBI confirmed that personnel from its local office were assisting authorities.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also became involved in the investigation.

Federal assistance may include firearms tracing, forensic analysis and other technical support requested by local investigators.

Authorities have not publicly established where the suspect obtained the firearm or whether any other individuals were involved.

The police chief initially described the weapon as a long gun, a category that includes rifles and shotguns.

Investigators have not announced a motive or identified any warning signs that may have preceded the attack.

They also have not established whether the teenager attended the school previously or had any personal connection with students or employees.

Evidence collection, witness interviews and the examination of available recordings are expected to remain important parts of the investigation.

Officials have asked the public to rely on confirmed information rather than circulating unverified claims about the suspect or victims.

Oregon Leaders Respond to Tragedy

The shooting prompted expressions of grief from elected officials across Oregon.

Governor Kotek described the incident as a devastating day for the state and offered condolences to the families affected.

She said parents should never have to experience the fear and loss created by violence at a school.

U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley said his office was monitoring developments and expressed sympathy for the victims, their families and the Bend community.

Representative Janelle Bynum also responded, emphasizing that children should be able to attend school without fear of gunfire.

The reactions reflected widespread concern over the safety of students and teachers in places intended for learning.

The attack also brought renewed attention to how schools prepare for violent emergencies.

Silver Rail Elementary had locked exterior doors, but police said the attacker forced entry by shooting through them.

That detail is likely to become part of investigators’ examination of the incident.

However, authorities have not concluded that any particular security failure caused or worsened the tragedy.

Investigation Continues as Community Mourns

The attack has left families, school employees and residents facing difficult questions about what happened and why.

The suspect’s age is especially significant because the person responsible was also a minor.

Police have confirmed that the teenager lived in Bend but have not publicly identified him.

Investigators must still determine how he obtained the firearm, why he targeted the school and whether anyone had information suggesting that violence was being planned.

Authorities must also document the actions of the person who intervened and establish the full sequence of events inside the building.

Meanwhile, the immediate priority for the school district is supporting affected families and employees.

The two surviving victims remain a major concern as they receive medical treatment for critical injuries.

Bend-La Pine Schools has canceled Friday’s classes and activities across the district, allowing additional time for the community to respond.

Further information is expected from police as investigators confirm evidence and notify relatives.

As of Thursday evening, authorities had confirmed four people killed by the gunman, two critically injured and the death of the 16-year-old suspect. The motive remained unknown.
