Coventry City Crushes Newcastle 4-1 for Historic Home Win

Coventry earns its first Premier League home victory in 25 years as Jack Rudoni, Sidiki Cherif, Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni score.

Coventry City ended a 25-year wait for a Premier League home victory with a 4-1 win over Newcastle United at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Monday night. The promoted Sky Blues scored through Jack Rudoni, Sidiki Cherif, Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni to earn a second straight league victory and move out of the relegation zone.

The result gave Frank Lampard’s team its first home league win of the season and its first Premier League victory on its own ground since 2001. Coventry had opened the campaign with four straight league defeats before beating Nottingham Forest 1-0 away from home in September.

Rudoni gave Coventry the lead in the sixth minute after Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek brought down Cherif inside the penalty area. The midfielder converted the spot kick for Coventry’s first Premier League home goal in more than 25 years and the first penalty goal of his senior career.

After scoring, Rudoni lifted his shirt to reveal a message reading “Get well soon Nan.” Lampard later said Rudoni’s grandmother was in hospital after suffering a heart attack and praised the midfielder for handling a difficult period while helping his team.

Newcastle had opportunities to respond before halftime, but Coventry defender Bobby Thomas made two important interventions. He first cleared an effort off the line after Jacob Murphy redirected a Harvey Barnes cross, then recovered to stop Matias Fernandez-Pardo after the Newcastle attacker had rounded goalkeeper Carl Rushworth.

Coventry doubled its lead three minutes after halftime. Cherif, making his first Premier League start for the club, collected a loose ball outside the area and drove a low shot through a crowded penalty area and beyond Hornicek for his first Coventry goal.

The 19-year-old forward had another major chance soon afterward but missed from close range. Newcastle took advantage in the 70th minute when defender Sven Botman drove a long-range shot into the top corner to cut Coventry’s lead to 2-1.

Any possibility of a Newcastle comeback faded when substitute Ellis Simms restored Coventry’s two-goal advantage in the 81st minute. Brandon Thomas-Asante won possession near the edge of the area and helped create the chance, with Simms scoring shortly after entering the match.

Mfuni completed the scoring five minutes later. The 18-year-old defender moved into the penalty area and finished left-footed for his first senior goal, becoming Coventry’s youngest Premier League goalscorer.

The 4-1 scoreline reflected Coventry’s ruthless finishing more than a lack of attacking opportunities for Newcastle. The visitors had spells of possession and created chances, but Coventry defended key moments well and repeatedly threatened on the counterattack.

Lampard said afterward that Coventry had played like the team he wants it to become. He praised the players’ work rate, belief and energy but warned that one strong result did not change the scale of the challenge facing a newly promoted club.

“We played like the team we want to be here,” Lampard told Sky Sports. He also described the display as a complete performance while stressing that Coventry would need many more performances at that level during the season.

For Newcastle, the defeat continued a difficult run away from home. Matthias Jaissle’s team had a chance to move as high as fourth in the table with a victory, but instead suffered its second consecutive 4-1 away defeat.

Jaissle said Newcastle had controlled parts of the match but failed in the areas that decided the game. He apologized to the traveling supporters and said his players needed to improve both defensively and in finishing the chances they created.

Coventry’s victory carried added historical weight because the club is back in the Premier League for the first time since the 2000-01 season. The Sky Blues won the 2025-26 Championship to return to the top flight after a quarter-century absence.

Their first five league matches back produced four defeats and only one victory, with Coventry also failing to score at home in losses to Hull City and Brighton. The wins over Nottingham Forest and Newcastle have now given Lampard’s side six points from its past two league matches.

The next test comes quickly. Coventry travels to Tottenham Hotspur on Monday, October 19, with an opportunity to make it three Premier League victories in a row.

Newcastle, meanwhile, returns home to face Aston Villa on Saturday. The Magpies will be looking for a response after a result that exposed their missed chances and defensive problems on a memorable night for Coventry.
