Russell Brand appeared at Southwark Crown Court in London on Monday as jury selection began in his trial on seven sexual offense charges involving six women. The British comedian and actor has pleaded not guilty to three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault.
The alleged offenses span a decade, from 1999 to 2009. Brand, 51, has denied the accusations and is expected to remain in court as the case moves from jury selection to opening arguments and evidence.
Reuters reported that Brand arrived at the courthouse with his wife, Laura Gallacher. He did not answer questions from reporters outside the building. His appearance Monday marked the formal start of a case that has drawn international attention since criminal charges were first announced in 2025.
Judge Joel Bennathan addressed prospective jurors before they were selected. He reminded them that Brand is a well-known public figure and instructed them not to research the defendant, the allegations or previous media coverage during the trial. Jurors in criminal cases are expected to decide the case only from evidence presented in court.
The Crown Prosecution Service first authorized five charges against Brand in April 2025 after a Metropolitan Police investigation. Those original charges involved four women and alleged conduct between 1999 and 2005. In December 2025, prosecutors authorized two more charges involving two additional women and alleged incidents in 2009.
The additional counts brought the case to seven charges involving six women. The CPS said when announcing the later charges that prosecutors had reviewed the evidence and determined there was sufficient evidence for the new counts to be brought before a court. That decision was not a finding of guilt.
Brand has entered not-guilty pleas to all of the charges. In a public video after the first charges were announced, he referred to his past struggles with drug and sex addiction but said he had never been a rapist. The statement was part of a broader denial of the criminal allegations against him.
The prosecution is expected to begin presenting its case after the jury is sworn in. Reuters reported that jurors were due to be formally sworn Tuesday, with the prosecution expected to open its case later in the week. The Associated Press also reported that Monday’s proceedings were focused primarily on jury selection.
Estimates for the length of the trial have varied. Reuters reported that proceedings are expected to last about six weeks, while the Associated Press said the case could continue for as long as 10 weeks. The schedule can change depending on the pace of testimony, legal arguments and other issues that arise during proceedings.
The case is being heard at Southwark Crown Court, one of London’s major criminal courts. Because the proceedings are active, British contempt-of-court rules restrict reporting and commentary that could create a substantial risk of prejudicing the trial.
The women connected to the charges are also protected by British law from being publicly identified as alleged victims of sexual offenses. News organizations therefore generally avoid publishing names or details that could reveal their identities.
Brand became prominent in Britain as a comedian, television presenter and radio host before moving into film. His movie credits include Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek. In more recent years, he has built a large online audience through videos and podcasts focused on politics, wellness, spirituality and media criticism.
The criminal investigation began after allegations against Brand became public in 2023 through reporting by The Sunday Times, The Times and Channel 4’s Dispatches. Brand denied wrongdoing at the time. Police later said they had received reports from women following that investigation and began their own inquiries.
The current trial concerns only the criminal charges before the court. The jury will be asked to decide whether prosecutors prove each count beyond a reasonable doubt after hearing the evidence and the defense case.
Brand’s wife accompanied him to court Monday, correcting an uncertainty in earlier reports that said she was merely expected to attend. Photographs and video from outside Southwark Crown Court showed the couple arriving together before jury selection began.
The opening phase of the trial will focus on the prosecution’s presentation of the case and the evidence supporting the seven charges. Brand’s defense will have the opportunity to challenge that evidence, question witnesses and present its own case under the rules of the court.
No verdict has been reached, and the charges remain allegations unless and until they are proved in court. The next major step is the swearing-in of the jury, followed by the prosecution’s opening presentation later this week.
