The Trump hush-money trial began in New York on Monday, revealing the alleged details of how the former President tried to manipulate the 2016 election through undisclosed payments to adult film star, Stormy Daniels. From the courtroom, multiple perspectives converge to paint a picture of a high-stakes battle, under a scrutiny that only a few can weather.

As an ex-President facing unprecedented criminal charges, Donald Trump has pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records. Trump’s alleged ‘catch-and-kill’ operation, designed to hide potential scandals from the public view, is at the heart of the case. The financial details of his dispute with Daniels were recorded as legal expenses, a move the prosecutor argues was a calculated cover-up designed to tilt the 2016 election in his favor.

Matthew Colangelo, the prosecutor, contends that there were three key objectives of the alleged conspiracy: publishing positive news about him, attacking his rivals, and monitoring any damaging stories to quickly suppress them. According to Colangelo, “this case is about a criminal conspiracy and fraud. The defendant, Donald Trump, orchestrated a criminal scheme to corrupt the 2016 presidential election.”

The trial has so far triggered some unexpected reactions. The spectacle of Trump’s arguably uncomfortable body language during the reading of explicit past comments provided some courtroom drama. His defense lawyer, Todd Blanche, has struggled at times to make a coherent case, suggesting that Trump bears no responsibility for hush-money payments, and insisting that his client’s strategies were all part of standard legal practice.

The hush-money trial promises weeks of revelations, bound to test Trump’s well-known composure. On the stand, various high-profile names could testify, including David Pecker, ex-CEO of American Media Inc., the parent company of the National Enquirer. Once a close ally of Trump, Pecker’s testimony could prove crucial in determining the connection between the ‘catch-and-kill’ campaign and the alleged financial irregularities.

Despite defense arguments that the payments were acceptable, the Manhattan district attorney’s office will seek to prove that the accused committed a misdemeanor crime of falsifying records to cover a felony crime of violating campaign finance laws. The next few weeks will reveal whether Trump’s legal team can weather the storm that this historic trial promises to unleash.
