Aaron Sorkin spent three days trying to persuade Jesse Eisenberg to return as Mark Zuckerberg before turning to Jeremy Strong for his new Facebook drama.

Aaron Sorkin’s upcoming movie The Social Reckoning has cast Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg after Jesse Eisenberg turned down the role. Sorkin had hoped to convince Eisenberg to take on the part even though the actor had previously played the Facebook founder in The Social Network. The director reportedly spent three days trying to change Eisenberg’s mind and outlined his arguments for why the actor should accept the role.

Despite Sorkin’s efforts Eisenberg ultimately declined the part because he no longer wanted to be associated with Zuckerberg. Strong will now portray Zuckerberg in Sorkin’s new film which is set to release on October 9. This marks the third collaboration between Sorkin and Strong following their work on Molly’s Game and The Trial of the Chicago 7.

The director had warned other cast members that Strong might adopt a method acting approach when portraying Zuckerberg. Strong has defended his method acting style, saying it is in service of the material and not meant to cause discomfort. Despite criticism from fellow actors like Brian Cox Strong remains committed to his approach.

The Social Reckoning is a companion piece to the 2010 film The Social Network and dramatizes events surrounding Frances Haugen’s 2021 disclosure of internal Facebook documents. The movie stars Mikey Madison as whistleblower Frances Haugen and Jeremy Allen White as Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz.

White emphasized the importance of regulation in the tech industry and said safeguards are needed. He said major technology companies should face third-party oversight similar to regulators in other industries. Sony describes the film as a story inspired by the events that led to The Wall Street Journal’s Facebook Files investigation.

Principal photography for The Social Reckoning took place in Vancouver from October to December 2025. The film had a reported budget of $50 million and features cinematographer Jeff Cronenweth and composer Alexandre Desplat. Supporting cast includes Bill Burr and Wunmi Mosaku as well as Billy Magnussen and Betty Gilpin.

The film held a gala screening at Curzon Mayfair Cinema in London on September 29.

Sorkin wrote and directed the film and produced it with Todd Black as well as Peter Rice and Stuart M. Besser.
