New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart left the field with a knee injury during the first quarter of Monday Night Football matchup against the Los Angeles Rams. The injury happened on the team’s opening drive when Dart was pressured by Rams defenders. He was sandwiched between linebacker Byron Young and defensive end Josaiah Stewart during a third-down attempt. Dart’s left knee bent awkwardly after the play, causing him to stay on the ground holding his leg. He eventually walked under his own power toward the sideline and then toward the locker room. Dart later underwent X-rays as the Giants evaluated the injury.
Veteran quarterback Jameis Winston replaced Dart on the next drive, according to NBC New York. Before going down, Dart had completed three of five passes for twenty yards.
The injury occurred while Dart was attempting a pass on 3rd & 8 to Theo Johnson, according to a report from the New York Daily News. Johnson did not catch the ball, and Dart remained on the ground in pain after being hit.
Dart had started the season with a strong performance, completing twenty-three of twenty-nine passes for two hundred thirty yards and three touchdowns and no picks. The Giants initially said Dart was questionable to return after the injury but later ruled him out for the rest of the game.
Giants general manager Joe Schoen told ESPN during the game that Dart was “going to be OK,” according to NBC Sports. The full extent of the knee injury had not yet been announced.
In addition to Dart’s injury, wide receiver Malik Nabers also suffered a shoulder issue in the same quarter, The Baltimore Sun reported. Nabers’ injury happened on the second-to-last play of the first quarter.
He returned to play in the second quarter after receiving medical attention.
