Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Alec Pierce left Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs early after appearing to suffer a leg injury in the first quarter. He was seen going into the medical tent shortly after the incident, and later had to be carted off the field. Pierce was unable to put any weight on his left leg during the play, which raised concerns about a possible serious injury. The Colts later announced that Pierce had suffered a heel injury and ruled him out for the remainder of the game.
The Chiefs went on to defeat Indianapolis 33-30 in overtime.
This latest issue comes on the heels of a recent heel injury that had kept him out of practice earlier in the week, according to CBS Sports. Pierce had been practicing in recent days, but was not able to participate in Thursday’s session due to the heel problem, according to a report from CBS Sports. He had previously been cleared to return to practice on Wednesday, but his status was uncertain after the latest setback.
Pierce underwent a cleanup procedure on his left ankle during the offseason and missed most of the preseason. The new injury affected the same left heel and ankle area, but it has not been confirmed that the two injuries are directly connected.
Pierce had one catch for 11 yards before leaving the game.
There is no confirmed timetable for Pierce’s return, including whether he will be available for next Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans. The team initially listed him as questionable to return against Kansas City before later ruling him out for the rest of the game.
Colts coach Shane Steichen said X-rays on Pierce’s heel were negative. Pierce was seen leaving Arrowhead Stadium on crutches with his lower left leg in a boot and was scheduled to undergo further evaluation Monday.
The Colts have not announced how much time Pierce could miss. His availability for Week 3 against Houston remains uncertain pending further evaluation.
