Theo James has dismissed reports that Meghan Markle will be joining the cast of Netflix’s crime drama The Gentlemen. In an interview with Town & Country, the actor addressed speculation about the former royal’s return to acting. James joked that Sarah Ferguson, also known as Fergie, would be appearing in the show. He added that the talk about Markle joining the series was mostly just hype. James emphasized that the focus right now is on promoting season two of the show. He also noted that season three is expected to follow soon. Despite dismissing the rumors, James did not completely rule out the possibility of Markle joining in the future. He said that details about the show are still uncertain and up for discussion.
Manda Levin, a key figure in the production, was also asked about the casting rumors at the Edinburgh TV Festival, according to The Hollywood Reporter. She gave a vague response when questioned, saying that all possibilities were open.
The rumors of Markle’s involvement began after a royal commentator reported early talks between her and the show, according to a report from Yahoo News. The story gained attention due to Markle’s recent departure from the television world, newsnationnow.com reported. She had last appeared on Suits before becoming a royal.
The casting news sparked a wave of media attention and speculation. However, reports soon emerged that the offer to Markle had been revoked. Tina Brown, a former editor-in-chief of Vanity Fair and The New Yorker, said the situation became too difficult to continue. She wrote about the intense pressure surrounding a Substack article.
Despite the controversy, James expressed excitement for the show’s future. He said the team plans to expand the world of the show and travel to new countries.
The Gentlemen is set to return for its second season on Sept. 3, 2026. The show’s official description for the upcoming season mentions a year passing since Eddie and Susie joined forces in Bobby’s criminal empire. The trailer for the new season is available below.
