The capital city of Niger, Niamey, was shaken by an armed mutiny that threatened the ruling military junta on Friday and Saturday. Gunfire erupted around midnight as soldiers launched attacks on loyalist forces, with clashes occurring near the Diori Hamani International Airport and the presidential palace. The airport is a key strategic location, housing Base 101, a major military air base, and the headquarters of Russia’s Africa Corps in the country.

The mutiny was led by soldiers who were mostly deployed in areas worst affected by jihadi violence, according to analysts. These soldiers were reportedly angry over deteriorating conditions, including complaints about food rations and inadequate equipment, according to ABC News. The unrest escalated into sustained gunfire that lasted through the night, with mutineers taking hostages at the air base, according to a report from France 24.

Loyalist forces, including the presidential guard, fought to regain control of key areas like the airport and the presidential district. The situation was further complicated by Russia’s involvement, as its Africa Corps reportedly provided both ground and aerial support. According to analysts, the mutineers outnumbered the elite presidential guard, but Russian forces helped turn the tide.

Moscow’s ambassador to Niger said the country had asked for help, and that the mutineers were neutralized thanks to the intervention of Russia’s Africa Corps. The mutiny was part of a broader trend of instability in the Sahel region, where jihadi violence has worsened in neighboring countries like Mali and Burkina Faso. The junta, which seized power in 2023, had promised to bring stability but instead the security situation has deteriorated.

Recent deadly attacks on military positions have added to the growing discontent among soldiers, with at least 18 killed in southern Niger. The mutineers were eventually pushed back and dozens of them were arrested or killed, with footage of their capture shown on state television, the BBC reported. The fate of the mutineers remains unclear, as authorities have not disclosed any charges against them.

Following the unrest, military trucks and checkpoints were seen across Niamey, especially along roads leading to the airport and presidential district. The junta leader, Abdourahamane Tchiani, was yet to make any public comments or appearances during the crisis. Regional allies like Algeria and Turkey expressed support for Niger, urging restraint to preserve stability.

The Alliance of Sahel States, which includes Burkina Faso and Mali, also condemned the mutiny and backed Niger’s efforts to restore order. The Africa Corps is believed to have between 200 and 300 personnel in Niger, primarily supporting the junta and fighting jihadis. This latest event highlights how internal pressures within military ranks are growing, especially as insecurity increases across the Sahel.

The mutiny was not only a challenge to the junta but also a sign of deeper issues in governance and military morale. Security forces have increased patrols around key sites in Niamey, including the main airport entrance and the presidential pavilion. The situation in Niger remains fragile, with analysts warning that more unrest could follow if underlying grievances are not addressed.

The role of foreign military forces, particularly Russia’s Africa Corps, has raised questions about the future direction of Niger’s security policies. With jihadi attacks becoming more frequent and deadly, the military junta’s ability to maintain control is being tested. The mutiny underscores how internal pressures within military structures can quickly escalate into broader political instability.

Despite the recent crackdown, many Nigerien soldiers continue to express dissatisfaction with their government and living conditions. The international community is watching closely as Niger struggles to balance its own internal challenges with regional security threats.
