The Knoxville Smokies ended their recent losing streak with a victory over the Biloxi Shuckers in a minor league baseball game. This match was part of the Smokies’ two-week road trip that had started with a strong performance but ended in disappointment after four straight losses. The Smokies had shown great offensive form earlier in the series, scoring 16 runs in the first game including nine in the opening inning.
This latest matchup marked the second time this season that the two teams faced off, with the last meeting happening in July, according to MLB.com. The Smokies had a tough finish to July, going 4-9 over their final 13 games and losing 15 or 24 games during that month. Despite the struggles, the Smokies remained just half a game behind Rocket City in the Southern League North standings.
Meanwhile, the Shuckers were in last place in the South division after a poor run of games this month. Although the series had little impact on the standings, it was important for both teams to build momentum heading into the end of the regular season. Kane Kepley led the Smokies’ offensive effort and is considered one of the top prospects in the Cubs organization.
The 22-year-old has been a standout since arriving in Knoxville on August 4th and currently ranks as the Cubs’ No. 5 prospect. Kepley’s current on-base streak is the longest active one among Smokies players, and he has shown strong performance in recent weeks. He also posted a .350 batting average in 15 plate appearances and hit .350 in August.
The Shuckers have a strong group of prospects, including top-ranked player Jesus Made and others like Luis Pena, Josh Adamczewski, and Andrew Fischer. However, the Shuckers’ pitching staff has been struggling this month, ranking among the worst in Double-A. Another key player for the Smokies was Alex Madera, who had the best offensive month in his professional career.
Madera hit .383 in August and led the Smokies. In this game, Kane Kepley hit a two-run home run in the third inning and reached base five times, according to a report from Yahoo Sports. Kepley’s performance was part of a larger offensive effort by the Smokies that included contributions from Miguel Useche and Carter Trice.
The Shuckers did manage to score a run in the third inning with a solo home run by Alexey Lumpuy. In the eighth inning, first baseman Josiah Hartshorn hit a solo home run that brought the Cubs within one run. Hartshorn’s home run was his 16th of the season and marked his 100th RBI overall on the season.
The game featured pitching performances from several players including Yenrri Rojas and Tyler Ras who helped secure the win. The Smokies’ victory was a welcome boost after a difficult stretch in July and showed their potential for success. With three weeks left in the regular season, both teams are focused on preparing for the upcoming postseason.
