The Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire is facing an uncertain future after government funding for the site was significantly reduced. The observatory, home to the famous Lovell Telescope, has long played a central role in British astronomy and scientific research.
A petition calling for the facility to be protected has collected more than 5,000 signatures. Despite the public support, UK Research and Innovation said the e-MERLIN radio astronomy project will not be prioritized for additional funding after its current agreement ends in March 2028.
The decision has drawn strong criticism from scientists, researchers and public figures. An open letter was sent to Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham expressing concern about the possible loss of the observatory. The letter described Jodrell Bank as a vital tool for studying the universe and called it one of the world’s clearest eyes on the sky.
Scientists have warned that ending operations at Jodrell Bank would represent a major setback for UK astronomy. The funding cuts could affect nearly 3,000 researchers who rely on the facility and threaten 28 jobs directly connected to the observatory.
UKRI, which manages the funding, has an annual budget of nearly £10 billion. The reduction in support is part of a broader series of funding decisions made by the Science and Technology Facilities Council.
The STFC said it followed a careful process when deciding which projects should receive continued investment. The Jodrell Bank decision is one of several funding reductions affecting the British science sector in recent weeks.
Other international research projects have also been affected. UK support connected to the Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile has reportedly been reduced, while funding for the Next-Generation Transit Survey, which searches for planets outside the solar system, was cut by nearly half.
Supporters of Jodrell Bank argue that the observatory remains essential to international scientific cooperation. The campaign to preserve its operations continues, with scientists, public figures and members of the public backing the effort.
The petition has also become a symbol of wider concerns about the future of science funding in the United Kingdom. Critics believe that allowing Jodrell Bank’s research capabilities to decline would harm both local scientific work and the country’s international reputation in astronomy.
Jodrell Bank has been a major center for radio astronomy for decades. Its facilities have helped scientists track spacecraft, study distant galaxies and make important discoveries about the universe.
The current situation reflects the growing financial pressures facing scientific institutions across the UK. No final date has been announced for a complete closure of the observatory, but the loss of future funding has left researchers and supporters uncertain about what will happen after March 2028.
